Tell us what your preventative maintenance is on your horses...

Here is mine...

A daily probiotic.

Soft Ride Boots when hauling.

Daily joint supplement.

Regular Adequan injections.

Allergy shots for my young horse.

Occasional magnetic blanket therapy.

Daily stretching and massage.

Chiropractic as needed.

Plenty of exercise to keep them in shape.

How is allergy shots preventative maintenance? I feed forco and use PENTOSAN and adequan load once a year. Legend or polyglycan for horses that need it when they run. I gave up on feed through joint supplements.

If he doesn't get his allergy shots he will stay stopped up, coughing and miserable. Along with getting sinus infections. He's just like a person who has allergies. I just figure it in with my preventative maintenance, lol.

Mine varies on the horse

Good farrier, I do barefoot, so in the summer they are trimmed every 4 weeks

Well balanced diet, I use low starch, flax seed, free choice mineral and salt loose with no fillers no additives

Papaya to help with ulcers, and mainly so if I need to add anything to feed they will still eat also proven to deworm horses

For joint suppliment, I use Lubrysin, did try formula 1 noni with HA but too difficult to get where I am, am going to try exceed 6 way this year in addition to lubrysin

Day of event, or day before, day of and day after I will give omeprazole to prevent ulcers

Back on track blankets, quick wraps, no bows (depends on the horse)

SNM gel/poultice

Vet/Massage/Chiro as needed

Thermotex if I find they are tight

Game ready if I need to on the legs, usually use ice boots instead

I use SmartPak Flex senior and it works great. I love the convenience of the SmartPaks. I realize that there are lots of people who claim that feed through supplements are ineffective, but I use them. My husband has a bum knee and my neighbor has horrible ankles... without the joint supplements they hurt all the time. Those supplements have been a life saver, especially for my neighbor. He was taking 6 Advil a day for years, trying to get through the day. I bought him the supplement I get my husband and it has changed his life, according to him, lol.

If it works that good on my hubby and neighbor then it is worth a try on my horses. I will admit that my older horse definitely feels better to me when he is taking the supplement. My younger horse has no issues and just gets it as a preventative measure.

You have to develop your own program. Do what works for you, that's what I do. For me, the proof is in the pudding.

Smart Pak is one of the FEW supplements that I have not used. I understand that they are good supplements. I use Platinum Performance. Used to use Platinum CJ and had phenomenal results with it. I no longer ride that horse. I agree that if something works for you stick with it.

I have had horses for way over 50 years. I find mine stay a lot healthier if treated them like horses. Mine are out in a pasture and come into stalls to eat, morning and night. They get premium fertilized hay from square bales that I hand feed, morning and night. I have bought one round bale in my life and did not like the results. I feed a moderately priced 14% pellet made by Lonestar feed mill in Nacogdoches TX salt and Platinum Performance. I a!so feed in barrels cut in half on the ground.

I have my horses injected when the vet says they need it. One horse has a maintenance dose of Rebalance for EPM every 4-6 months when I tell the vet he needs it.

One horse has her legs wrapped a few days before a barrel race with CoolPack. She has some suspensory issues. She is left in the pasture. No blankets, no soft rides. No frills. My horses look better than most horses at barrel races and most of the small barrel races usually have around 200 horses entered.

Need to add, my horses are shod every 4 weeks. My horses'teeth are floated once a year. Young horses are done more often

I was just reading this morning a great study that compared humans to horses in regards to joint supplements. The main ingredients such as glucosamine, ha, chondroiton etc are extremely assimilated by the human body but not equine digestive system. But whatever works is awesome.

That's what they say... but lots of them say that there is no real evidence that they work for people either. Horses can't talk so I have trouble believing what "they" say, lol. I know that my horses tell me it helps them, by the way they act and feel.

I let mother nature take care of my horses. like.... what did the wild horses do before farriers?!

I'm just kidding.
----
Regular farrier per her suggestions. Right now I've seen her about 2 times a week because of this stupid abscess wreaking havoc in my horses RF :(

Free choice quality hay, my horses have never been so healthy before this diet plan!

Chiro has moved to an as needed basis.

I also have started lunging for at least 15 mins a day before I ride. I stop after their 5 minute warm-up and stretch them. They get so loose and really start using their body.

I also like to use my vet on the regular vs outsource things like, teeth, shots etc. My vet is very attentive and doesn't up charge me for everything, so if I ask for a peek at my horse he'll do it without draining my checkbook.

I probably do a lot less than most people but by horses are fat, healthy & in good shape.

Most important for me is taking care of their feet, I do all my own trimming work as I don't have anyone else that I trust other than my vet who shoes for me as needed.

I feed high quality grass/alfalfa mix hay and provide loose salt and minerals.

I use PHT magnetic products, and massage or chiro as needed.

^^^ That is pretty much our program plus worming them.
We have a farrier.  Our horses are healthy.

I have noticed a direct correlation between an excellent diet, a wonderful shoer, hock injections as needed, quality tack, SmartPakGI Ultra, Forco, Stressline Therapy and Massage, OxyMax, a careful exercise routine, and Sore No More poulticing after runs and:
All of the above, now COMBINED with Game Ready, Adequan, Legend, and Previcox.

2D very consistently at big shows, winning 1D at smaller, winning rodeos, etc, etc, to suddenly hitting the 1D along with some big names at a bigger set. That's a half second, my friends. Talk about an attention getter for me! Didn't do a thing differently except for the shots and Previcox, didn't ride differently, nothing. Just knocked off a full .5 seconds. Umm, ya.

WOW... you give SmartPak GI Ultra, Forco and OxyMax all to the same horse?

You say you knocked off a half second after adding the Adequan, Legend and Previcox?

All of ours are turned out 24/7.

They are all on a custom mix of alfalfa pellets, oats and rice bran and also get FORCO. The two I'm competing on get THE Muscle Mass.

Only one horse needs hock injections about once, maybe twice a year, so when the vet says it's time, I won't hesitate to inject him.

I have BOT products, but I usually don't use them unless we're hauling or stalling overnight. In those two situations, I've seen a HUGE difference on my gelding that stocks up when he's stalled.

I have an equine podiatrist do all of my farrier work (conveniently, he's also my vet).
