No one seemed to respond to the suggestion so I figured I would make a new post. We already have the Extreme Mustang Makeover and the Retired Race Horse Project. They have been pretty successful at giving horses a second chance and bringing awareness to rescues, etc. What if the Rescues did the same thing? What if they had a national Rescue Registry where you could get points at local/regional rescue shows to qualify for a national show. It would operate the same as a breed registry but instead of papers coming from bloodlines they're registered through a Rescue. The shows could include all events since rescues are all breeds. They could get sponsorship for added money to sweeten the deal, just like the Makeover events do. Thoughts? Would you be interested in competing at something like that?

An interesting idea, which I like, that possibly would get the rescue horses into the right hands. Don't get me wrong many do get into the correct hands, but I've heard alot of stories of horses being rescued then returned due to owners having no clue....

i think this is a good idea however my question would be what or who are the type of people that purchase or adopt rescue horses? Are they the type that will then go on into some sort of competition? If I'm thinking to the people I know who basically buy the local auction barn special (which maybe I'm wrong but these would be similar to rescue type horses), these people aren't into competition, they want a cheap, cheap horse that they might ride once or twice a year or never. I guess I'm not sure if there would be enough rescue type owners interested in competing.

I personally have no interest in a rescue horse at this stage of my life. I don't want to deal with rehab issues they may have and because I only have a certain amount of horse money to support my hobby I need to spend it wisely. Because I compete in reining and barrels for those disciplines I am looking for specific bloodlines. Bloodlines I know excel at my chosen disciplines and bloodlines I know I click with personality wise.

Good idea in some respects but I guess not for me personally.

I just want to say one of the biggest hurdles horse rescues and adoptions have is that they want you to keep the horse it's entire life, no selling ever. That's a commitment most ppl can not make.
And I agree 99.9% of ppl who adopt these horses just want a trail horse or a pet. They don't have the money it takes to compete on one.

What if you got trainers involved to donate time for horsemanship clinics to educate new owners?

What if you made the events more affordable than breed shows so that people might consider showing? Offer a ranch trail class or an ACTHA approved trail class for the trail riders.

Most of these ppl are only interested in it as a trail riding hobby. You might be able to get maybe 30% of the ppl who adopt interested in doing that bc think about if they were serious they would a starter horse not a rescue. You would be hard pressed to find a trainer to donate time for this as well. Trainers do this for a business to make money not a hobby.

There is a gal trying to start such a project you should contact. She started a facebook page and called it the kill pen project. You can also find her on facebook, her name is Anna Hurbert. I really do think the concept is a good one. It's so very sad. There are some NICE horses that through no fault of their own end up in kill pens. We rescued a mare from the kill pen. She came with her AQHA papers. She is by Twaynas Dash our of a Little Bits Bull daughter. Girl that had her was moving, it was crunch time so she gave the horse free to a supposed good home. Only to be at the local auction dumped in the lose horse pen just a few days later. People will offer a "good home" then turn around and dump them. They are a whopping $200 bucks richer then they were before so they do it.

THANK YOU! That's very helpful! I already know a handful of local full time trainers that would be willing to donate a little time. If it brought some new people into the horse industry, saved even a few horses, and helped educate I think it would be worth it. I also believe if you could get the momentum started and the right people behind it asking how to make it work instead of focusing on why it won't work, then it would work.

You're right -- there's some nice horses that end up in poor situations. Look at the recent deal that was very publicized about the national champion that was starved to death. Sad part is so often the papers get lost in the process, depending on discipline,  and then their future is somewhat limited on account of that. At least this would open up another avenue for them to compete.
