Location: Oklahoma | Gelding wasn't very interested in his feed last night and left some alfalfa in his hay back. Neither has ever happened before while I've had him.
Feed him this morning and I would say that it took him about four hours to finish all his feed (assuming that my Lab didn't do it). He barely touched the new flake of alfalfa I had put out for him. He also has free choice bermuda grass round bale, but I'm not sure if he touched much of that. Bowel movements have been normal and I've watched him drink water. So, I went to the vet and got a tube of ulcer meds. Vet told me 10cc of the Omeprazole today and then 5cc until the tube runs out (30cc total).
I've never treated for ulcers before... so should he be back to eating normal tonight or will it take a few days for him to realize that it shouldn't hurt?
He has been on stall (small corral) confinement because he had his SI injected a week ago and vet wanted me to keep him up for 3-5 days and give him 2 grams of bute for five days, rest for two days, and then resume for five more days. The weather and ground are just too bad to risk letting him out, so he's still being stalled until things can dry out a bit more. |

| Mine started feeling better within 2 doses and wanted his grain and gobbled up his alfalfa. I took him off of grain though since that is the first thing he refused and seemed to bother him the most.

Afleet, all I can tell from the tube is that it says it's Omeprazole. I'm assuming there isn't just a one size fits all product? He wasn't scoped or anything, just going by the symptoms that I've heard other people say and he was put into conditions that would allow them to form. |

| Make sure you're dosing with a probiotic paste. ProBios seems to work fine. iResponse is best. |

| What type of feed are you feeding? It needs to be low starch and high fat. Alfalfa hay is the best hay to feed a ulcer horse. It helps with the avid. |

Thanks, everyone. CPC, I think I have some probios in my first aid kit I'll give to him.
He's on Renew Gold. He wasn't too interested in his feed this evening, but he had cleaned out his hay bag, so I loaded it back up for him. I will go down after dinner and recheck it and give him the probios. |

| I'm wanting to see an improvement so bad but not much with mine so far. I'm going to go past the 28 day treatment period a little. I picked up some oral liquid omeprazole that is compounded. I will use that for maintenance after the healing phase. I also put him on Alfa Lox. We'll see . Ugh |

Good. I've had at least one that went completely off her grain and alfalfa hay without ulcer problems. Had her fully scoped at A&M, NO ulcers. Started 1/2 tube of probiotic paste, 2X a day, she was back eating some of it within 2 mornings, back to full appetite in 5 . Forco is a wonderful thing to start.
Anytime anybody goes off, I do a full 7 days of probiotic paste. If I have more evidence of ulcers, (the attitude, sore ulcer accupoints, poor performance, looking ganted up, etc, etc), I do 10-14 days of UlcerGard too. |

Location: Kansas | We had a mare confined for a hock injury and we were giving her bute for the pain. She could not tolerate the bute and was showing symptoms of ulcers. We took her off bute and treated with omeprazole. She obviously felt better and was eating again within a few days.

Thanks! He's been on Forco for a couple of months now, so I hope he doesn't get too bad! I thought maybe he was just being picky last night since he went over and stood by the other horse that eats from a hook over feeder (he eats from a tub) and acted like he wanted his feed (same exact feed). So I let the other horse finish and gave him the hook over, but he still wasn't interested. The alfalfa is the biggest flag. Neither horse leaves any left behind. I would up not having probios like I thought, but will get some tomorrow. He is just mooping around, we went for a walk and he acted fine, but I know he wants his freedom back.
The vet wanted me to do another five days of bute, but I should skip it, right? I don't want to make matters worse. |

Location: bring on the heat, NV | We are treating my husbands made. We saw results in two days! We didn't have her scoped. We tried power packing, 24hr feed, graining.... No improvement she was super colicy and her ulcers are (symptoms anyhow) from last fall so she is getting 28 days of treatment. Its been a week on meds and she is filling out Thank goodness!! I used horseprerace.com... And got the omeprazole/ranitdine combo.... That's how bad she was.... I read up on both and they do compliment each other. I order her THE muscle mass with ulcer maybe might try a pre/probiotic after I research. Our horses get alfalfa already. Sorry getting babies to bed lol so trying to get all down. |

| succeed is a wonderful ulcer treatment- also I give alfalfa/timothy cubes soaked and softened and mix the feed into that- if their belly is upset I really think this helps a lot to not let the grain/feed upset it even more- and they love it in hot water on those really cold days- |

Location: Somewhere between S@%&# stirrer and Saint | To treat ulcers you need to treat and cure them for a month. The horse needs to have at least 2.28 grams of omeprazole for a month. Sorry but your vet had you drop down to quick. Even though we don't know the concentration in your tubes. You should start seeing improvement fairly soon in the eating habit but it takes a month to heal the ulcers.Contact me about Omeprazole Research. |
