I am looking at a gelding who's mom is Impressive bred.  If she was tested and was N/N would he have to be tested as well?  Have never really been interested in one bred this way so never really paid attention.

No need to retest if she is N/N.

I love impressives. Shane's steer wrestling horse he had when we met was Impressive and I had a stud at one time, both were super athletic.  If the mare was N/N there is no way she can pass HYPP on to the foal.

I believe it should be on the gelding papers.

This. If he is registered then the N/N should be on his papers. Although I am not quite sure when AQHA implemented this. We have a 2 year old stud, Impressive bred on the dam's side and his papers have N/N listed on the registration certificate.

Depends on how much Impressive is in his bloodlines... My Stallion Sire side was breed to Impressive, my vet advised me to for breeding purposes, with Impressive being that close... Both parents were N/N. I would say probably not, but I rather cover my back.

If both parents are N/N, they can only produce N/N foals. I have heard people say that even if a horse tests N/N, they still won't take their chances. Um, there's no chance to take. A N/N horse won't suddenly become N/H or H/H.

At this time he does not have papers.  My best friend owns him and his mom and is friends with the stud owner.  She never thought she would sell him so she wasn't worried about it.  She is working with the stud owner on getting papers now.

If this horse wasn't coming from her I wouldn't even look at him.

Thank you everyone for answering my question.  If this works out I will post some pictures.  He should turn out to be a cool looking dude.  He is Impressive on the bottom side and Frenchmans Guy/Dash Thru Traffic and Raise a Secret on the top.

He is an unbroke 3 year old but for the money she is wanting, I don't think I could go wrong.

Now add to that the really nice 7 year old I have that I need to focus on and I will have my hands full.  I was thinking of bringing my Bucky up so I at least have something to run.

Love Impressive horses. If they are N/N, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

What's the father? The mare can't pass it on if she's N/N.

My guy in my avatar is Impressive. And N/N. He is an amazing horse! Does everything. Trails, jumps, team pens, halter, western pleasure, you name it, and pretty much excels at it. And now we're running barrels on him and he loves it! Can't wait to get in there! If you buy this horse, I bet it's going to be a good one with those bloodlines. Good luck!
