Any barrel race producers on here that use the Charhorse system? Pros/cons? any suggestions when using it? Tomorrow we are hosting our first barrel race with the Charhorse system and no one in my area has used it. Just looking for someone that is familiar with it.

Are you talking about the Charlie Horse Ranch software? If so I've done two races with that software.

We've used it many times, but I've found that an excel spreadsheet does the job just as good, if not better (if you are familiar with excel). Our folks around here complain that it always draws you up in the same spot on the ground... yadda yadda whatever. I prefer an excel spreadsheet and can send you mine if you like.

^ I prefer his excel spreadsheets for the payout most definitely. The CHR payouts never add up correctly. And if you need to move people around in the drag order it's MUCH easier to do that way than with the Charlie Horse system.

There's a learnin curve to the software but it's not terribly hard to use. The instructions online are pretty helpful when you know what to look for. I messed around with it a bit before I had my first show and I ended up being alright. I had to do a lot of switching around with my second show but I was able to keep it all straight in the system and we managed to do alright at that one too.

Well we kind of already bought the system so I would like I use it. All the people around here use excel. Who wants to be on call for me haha if I have any issues?

If your talking about the Charlie Horse? then you need to play around with it and set it up before you jump in head first at a jackpot. You need to set up your splits, rakes, etc.

Play around with making shows & adding riders & doing the office fees, added money, etc. Its not hard to figure out, just take some time to mess around & learn all the different aspects & functions and you'll be fine.

There's a manual online that has all the instructions on it. It's good to have on hand if you need it.

We have the team roping software and I have to say the customer service is awesome.  Gene is amazing and has helped me out several times.  He is also very willing to make changes to the programs.  For instance, a lot of our ropings have "add ons" after the first round.  Before he modified it I'd have to run my draws in the software and my add ons were on index cards.  I talked to him about what I needed and explained how I thought it would work best from the producers standpoint.  He made some changes and had me beta test it.  It's now incorporated into his software!  His willingness to work with producers makes it worth my time and money to use his programs.

I've used the CharlieHorse software when helping another producer. However, I prefer Excel spreadsheets, and that is what I used when I produced races.

I love CHR system. There is so much you can do with it.  Side pots, averages. target races, build in your rakes, set standards to separate riders with multiple horses, several different payout options, moving riders in a draw. Write and print your checks, gives you multiple reports, prints your draw with riders by draw order, by rider name, manually add times or you can have the eyes wired into it. Etc.  I have never had problems with the payout not adding up.  And whoever mentioned customer service is spot on.  You can call him any time you are in a jam and he will work you through it.  The more I use it the more I am able to do different things with it..  Much better than PayRaces that I used to use.

You have to change a setting in the set up so it draws you different where if you enter 3 horses not all 3 are top of drag or at the bottom on all three!
