I just had the vet out last week to check on a few things, including one of my horses who has had 2 bouts of being back sore for weeks at a time despite not being ridden at all. She did an exam and didn't find any underlying lameness that could be causing his issues so took a blood sample so I'm waiting for the results on that. While she was out she was also concerned that he'd lost some weight since the last time she'd seen him, despite my adding 1lb Renew Gold and 2ish dry lbs of alfalfa/bermuda cubes to his daily 2lbs of alfalfa pellets
(he also just started on Platinum Performance and beet pulp
). I said I figured the weight loss was due to him having to be moved to a different pen, so he went from being on a round bale 24/7 to only getting 2 feedings of hay
(I since bought a giant hay net so he has hay just about 24/7 again
). He still has a great appetite. Poor guy has had a stressful year though. He had a 1,000 mile trailer ride home when I bought him in August, he got beat up by other horses, started mounted shooting training, got strangles, was moved a small run, then had an abscess from hell that lasted 2 months.
So I'm just wondering if maybe these are related....waiting for the results has me nervous and impatient. Has anyone heard of ulcers causing back soreness? It moves around from right behind his withers to his loin area. Some days it's his whole back and other days it's just certain spots.

I have definitely noticed sore backs that were from ulcer pain in 2 of my horses. Once the horse was treated for ulcer, no more back pain.

Yes there are trigger points to look for for horses with ulcers. Look up dr depaulo. He has a YouTube video demonstrating diagnosis of ulcers with pressure points, And the levels of severity.

Thanks! I'm going to try some of those points. I'm really leaning towards this being ulcers.
