We have a one year old tri female miniature Australian Shepherd we want to breed her this summer...what can we breed her to with best results? Can we breed her to another tri or is better to breed to a Merle? TIA!!!

It really just depends on what colors and markings you would like to have. Some breeders will mark up the prices for a merle. The pups will usually come out some colors of each.
Ex: Red Tri X Merle=  red tri, red merle. (not always exact, depending on red or blue merle)
You CANNOT breed merle to merle though. Well, you can but it creates a lot of problems for the pup; Most commonly being blind &/or deaf.

That's what I was worried about. I really don't want any whites or culls...If they are all Tri's that's fine...just didn't know if tri to tri was a no no like merle to merle.

Gotcha! I have never heard about anything wrong with breeding Tri to Tri!

I have a tri male if you need a daddy for the momma. He's beyond cute and loves to work. Yes, he's going to be our new working dog. We run goats and he's ate up with herding. This was totally unexpected when I brought him for my husbands Christmas gift (lap dog). I've raised full size Aussie's for awhile with my Vet and we had some awesome personalities thru the years but this little guy takes the cake. Beyond smart...now we just need a monkey...

I've bred tri on tri and had litters that were still 50/50 merle.

If you breed tri to tri you will get a 100% tri litter. This cross usually does not have any issues with eyes or hearing, usually. There is always the slim possibility that there is a through back but tri on tri is definitely your safest bet.

You should also be ok breeding tri to merle. Typically litters are 50/50 tri/merle. Again this is usually. A lady used my mom's red tri male to breed to her blue tri female and ended up with a entire litter or all black tris. Same cross the next time resulted in a nice 50/50 mix.

The biggest issue is breeding double dilute meaning merle to merle. Litters of F1 pups can have issues with hearing and sight and if an F1 is bred again, the resulting litter is almost always culls.
