This is completely unlike him. He is a pig, he is usually trying to clean up imaginary grain on the outside of his stall while I'm haltering his pasture mate. He gets all but about one mouthful done and has done this the last 3 mornings. He cleans up all of his hay in his stall, and he's on a round-bale outside and he porks out all day. I know this is how strange stuff starts so I'm asking now. I have an appointment at the vet in about 2 hours for their spring shots and coggins, will definitely ask when I get there. But anyone know what it could be?

I'll say he does LOVE his turn-out time, and he's very excited to get outside every morning and prances all the way to the pasture, especially with this nice spring weather we are having. He is the first to be let out so he doesn't have to wait, could it just be excitement? I'm doubting that it's excitement but I figured I'd bring it up. Nothing else has changed with him, same attitude, work ethic, just blew his month long abscess a week ago Thursday, so he's is more excitable than normal.

Going to follow this thread.
My gelding has ulcers and doesn't eat all his hay pellets when he is feeling bad. A little ITZ paste and probiotics or stomach soothers usually help him. Then again, he is usually "depressed" looking if he has stomach problems from his ulcers.
I have no idea what it could be...
Hugs for you and your boy

I'd pick up some omperazole when you're at the vet!  Sounds like classic ulcer signs and once I put my gelding on omperazole he was back on his grain in a day and a half.  He would eat all of it, but not in one sitting like he should be.  It's good that he's still excited (my gelding would eat grass, but not touch his grain) about his turn out, but I'm afaid he will just continue to get more lethargic.  Glad you're going to the vet today!

I suspect ulcers, especially since you said he just blew a month long abcess. I'm thinking the pain of that could have caused one. I'd put him on some Omeprazole and go from there.

One thing you can try is get a tube of ulcerguard paste. Give the 1/4 tube dose for a few days in a row. By the second day if he is scarfing his grain again then I would suspect ulcers and treat for them. I have also had horses get bored with the same grain and I have to switch it up for a while.

In the Zone by Animal Element is a great way to get one eating and drinking. It is a fantastic way to relax them so they are not stressed. It has ACV and Aloe Vera for their tummies. It also has Shilijite which is an excellent electrolyte!

Β My horse's colon ulcers started like that. I had to take him off all molassas and beet pulp (even non molassas kind) and feed straight grains. Joint supplements also caused him to go off his feed too. Calcium to phosphorous ratios play a part in it too.

I dont mean to snatch the thread, but my gelding did not finish his grain the morning of our run at the DDBHC this past weekend. Should I be treating for ulcers?

You can always get a tube of ulcerguard and give it a few days.

Well, I got him looked at. The vet said ulcers wouldn't surprise him, and he said he's due for some dental work so they might be both contributing to this new development. scheduling dental next week. They have a new shipment of gastro-whatever coming in on Friday so I'll have to go back and get some then. Can I order this stuff online? or do I have to get it from the vet?

Step Sons got a race on Friday 1hr 1/2 away. We were planning on being out most of the day, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get to the vet on Friday before they close.

Honestly, I would atleast try to get some kind of medicine to start treatment for him ASAP.  I don't mean that rudely, I just I say this because my gelding was treated for ulcers two weeks ago (just omperazole paste I bought from my vet) and he went back on his feed a few feedings later.

Had his teeth done on Monday and he's back to taking his sweet time to eat.  I'm not 100% if it's because the "ulcers" (did not have him scoped), if he's sore from the floating, or if he just hates the Gastroade I started adding to his feed Monday night... or all three.   I soaked him a few alfalfa cubes and mixed the 3 oz of Gastorade in.  He ate that like a champ, so I don't think he's being nit picky about the Gastroade.  I know it's not a cure, but hopefully it will help soothe his stomach until my vet can get his order of Omperazole in tomorrow.  Just trying to help you prevent this.

everything but a mouthful of grain

he only gets 3/4lbs per feeding, so it's not like he's got a lot of grain to eat... Some grass sprouts, they are working hard to get it, but they also have a fresh round bale too. soaked alfalfa cubes in their stalls, and orchard grass also.

If you get it from your vet it will be more expensive.
I order all of mine through teskeys. They give a discount in store on most products if you get 3 or more I believe so I'm sure if you call and ask they may be able to give you the discount over the internet.

Gastro-aid works just as well as Ulcerguard. But keep in mind they don't treat ulcers. they get rid of the symptoms.

Omeprezol i believe treats them? I think. SOmeone correct me if I am wrong please.

Not taken rudely at all.  I've honestly never had to deal with ulcers, most likely because I never knew the signs before so getting this stuff is new to me!  I'm trying to find a vet that has something on hand for him, or someone that has it around here.
