Five year old.....has been in aluminum wedge heel shoes for over a year.  We NEVER reset a pair.  NEVER.  We live on rocks.

Anyways....been having problems with the farrier, even though he used to do great work.  Just always has an attitude like I'm the last person he wants to shoe for.  I keep a flexible schedule for him, am always here, cater to him as much as I possibly can, pay every time, etc etc etc.

He came out this morning....had a horrible bleeping attitude.  I was sick on top of it so I just kept my mouth shut and wanted it over with.  Does this foot first, horse refuses to put it down and bear weight because something hurt....farrier proceeds to wail on him with his hammer and cursing him......

How do you like this shoe job?????  Vent over.....farrier is fired.  I'm not going to even bother to start riding again if the surgeon releases me on Monday until my husband learns to shoe (he's going to be heading off to school soon).....

I'm sorry but this is not ok.  I am so sick and tired of farriers acting like they are doing me a favor by showing up.  I"M PAYING THEM for crying out loud.  It's money out of my pocket for a service they provide, and I expect that service to be good and to be professional....not this.....

Did you ever contact Doc Winfrey or Senator Brown? Over in Rolla? Both are horse vets and should know some good farriers. I've known them both since they got out of vet school...

I don't know how without googling them. If you happen to have their contact information PM me.  In the meantime I will look it up.  I know you have suggested them prior, but I've just been dealing with a lot here lately between surgery and other issues.

Thank you.  I'm more upset about how the horse was treated.  This horse is a gentleman and did NOT deserve to be treated like that.  I'm guilty though.  I could have put a stop to it all but was barely standing up straight from being sick and just didn't know how to handle it without blowing up at everyone.  I spent a few hours rubbing on him this evening and he's already forgiven me.

I had a guy once that was more aggressive than I cared for. I let it go, ONCE. The next time he went at my horse like he was gonna lay into him I yelled whoa whoa whoa as loud as I could and ran toward my horse. It stopped the guy in his tracks, I don't know if he wasn't sure whether I was yelling at him or the horse. He didn't ever lay into one of mine again. Don't use him anymore but for different reasons.

I don't know what it is with farriers i had one i love before i moved that was kind and gentle, with horse sense. But it seems like everyone one i met before and after that, feels like they have the right to scream and cuss, and hit and jerk and carry on. I have seen beat a a yearling, and scare it so bad it still has feet issues. I even had a female farrier scream and cuss and hit (she was just a couple months out of school like they taught her to do it there). I recently moved barns and used the one they use there and he was quiet and respectful even had his young family there with him bc the barn likes him so. I told the owner he was so quiet and gentle, she said "we have show arabians and we don't put up with that stuff here"

I hope you made it clear why he was fired.  I don't know why farriers think they are above us, but I hope you can find a good one.  It is your money and your horse, do what is best.

Even in school we were told in a worst case scenario we could slap one on the ribs with a flat hand to make a loud popping sound.. but NEVER hit one with a tool!!!!

BTW: If that horse is still lame he prolly has a hot nail...

He's dead lame.  Hubby is pulling fronts tomorrow.  I can't physically do it.  Still recovering from majory surgery.  Hubby still isn't home from work this evening yet.

That pretty much sucks.  I thank my lucky stars everyday for our farrier.

Hugs to you and prayers your horse is better when that shoe gets pulled.

It is a horrible job, sorry for your crappy luck.

As a preventative measure if you haven't already I would give the horse banamine, and apply magic cushion to draw the inflammation out.

If I remember correct, you are living in Montana, how far from the Alberta border are you?

Make sure he is up on Tetanus NOW... Please have him pull it when he gets home.... even of he can't deal with the clenches... (which can be rasped off or straightened with a screwdriver) Imaging a thorn DEEP under your fingernail.. Don't make him wait that long..

Just fired my old farrier for some of these same reasons! I feel like crap because I allowed him to shoe horses for years and found horrible issues with my horses feet once I discovered what was going on! Hoof imbalances, contracted heels and lamine brusing along with a recent diagnosis of ring bone that has possibly been started by poor hoof practices. Get rid of the sucker before he does something that might be irreversible!

So sorry and this is the reason I tip and bake for my farrier
all the time. He's great and I don't think I could handle looking
for a new farrier.

I just want to say I am very sorry!  I had a fantastic shoer and then 5 years ago, we found some land and wanted to move.  One of the things that made me even question moving to this great property was that I was going to lose my shoer.  Before I got this great shoer, I dealt with problems like yours including one horse ending up crippled due to bad shoeing.  When I moved, instead of dealing with the locals, I decided to just haul my mare to UC Davis and have their farrier work his magic.  I pay more than I should, but I consider it peace of mind and don't have to worry about him crippling my horse.  I really hate dealing with farriers so much.  It is so awful how they can hold you hostage.  BTW I showed your pic to my non-horsey hubby and asked him what he thought... "It looks awful" was his response.  You have every right to be upset.
