This is not a serious issue but I am just curious. Everytime my mare opens up to run whether it be in the pasture or lunging in the arena, she will buck. Its always when she is trying to run faster and then her legs fly up every single time. She could actually go alot faster is she stretched out instead of staying in a ball and bucking. She hasnt done it undersaddle but I havent pushed her into the speeds she does on her own. So instead of really galloping, she bucks. She has done this every single time even before I got her. She is 4 in june btw. Will I be able to teach her to gallop without bucking or could this be a physical issue.

We had a gelding that did that. It took lot's of saddle time to get him out of it.

Ya basically...so why doesnt she instead of buck. If she can hold her speed and kick out, she must be able to go faster lol

I think our gelding was ****ed at us for making him run. I know people will say they could be sore, ulcers, etc....but, that wasn't the case with him. He was angry that we were making him work. And, it stopped with a lot of riding.

I had one that bucked at a dead run during the pattern...later found 3 bone chips in his hock. Just for peace of mind you might want to get the horse checked out.

My gut, seeing as he does this on his own and not undersaddle, is that it may be a hocks or stifles issue. Check for PSSM too.

Oh no :( why would she do it more on her own than undersaddle if it was a pain issue...l'll get her looked at. She is due for shots anyway. What is pssm

Mine doesn't do it all the time, but he does like to buck and jump when he's running around. He's just playing. No hock/stifle issues and does not have PSSM or anything else that would show up in bloodwork.

My mare loves to jump/buck/rear in her paddock (sometimes all at the same time!). Thankfully she will not do it if we are running, but if im holding her back for a slow lope thru the pattern she will throw a few bucks in

My gelding did the EXACT same thing and we thought he needed his hocks injected but it turns out we took him to the vet bc he did it when running in the barrel pattern(but he kicked out like the whole time going through) and the vet said his back hocks were out of place and dropped and that he had rib pain. we got him adjusted and he was a little better but still did it every ounce ina while. so my trainer said everytime he kicks out smooch him up and make him run faster! the ultimate thing it was teaching my horse was that; if he kicks out he has to do a lot more work, and if he doesn't kick out he gets to rest....he hasn't kicked out like that in 4 months!:) good luck

So basically my mare probably had this issue before I even started her? She was almost 3 when I started riding her and was raised like a wild horse on pasture before then :( where could she have hurt herself?

I have one that did it too.  I was keeping him barefoot.  Vet said his heels were sore.  Started putitng shoes on him and it cured the problem.

Actually a lot of young ones have these sort of issues because they are still growing, literally 'growing pains' (if its hocks/stifles anyway). They are not done growing until the end of the fifth year. What is interesting to me is how much you said she does it. My filly loves to kick up too but not quite so much. That being said, my filly also has some soreness in her hocks and stifles. I put her on adequan and it helped a ton. My filly has never shown any symptoms of PSSM though. Her mannerisms are very even. I'm also monitoring her growth really closely with regular xrays. Keeping her comfortable is a top concern of mine.

Interesting article on growth:

http://www.equinestudies.org/ranger_2008/ranger_piece_2008_pdf1.pdf

Thus if we are going to ride them we have to be careful and work to make them comfortable.

She is an inch+ bum high right now too...so that probably doesn't help either. If I push her undersaddle(especially on the trail) she just stretches out and slow gallops effortlessly. Its almost as if she gets all tangled up and frustrated going fast on her own..... I'll get a video this afternoon. Dislocated my thumb in 2 places yesterday in a sledding accident so I'm trying to take it easy lol
