I posted this the day before yesterday but it got deleted. anyways im looking for new feeds with little to no starch and sugar. I found this feed Strategyยฎ Professional Formula GX Horse Feed. I like it but just got some questions. I have a 7 yr old gelding and we barrel race and gets moderate to kinda hard workouts. I need a feed that will fuel him but NOT make him hot headed so that why we want less starch and sugar. I will attach a link of the feed. we feed square bales of coastal hay. how much hay should we feed with this grain since your suppose to feed less of thiss grain. BUT I don't wanna have to feed him a lot of hay bc hay is literally the BIGGEST pain in the butt to get and put in the feed room. Any suggestion? or any other feeds that would be good? but isn't too pricey? Thanks again:):)

I firmly believe they should have access to hay at all times free choice. Grain is basically just a way to add extra calories when needed.

Nutrena has a Pro Force line out now that has a few good options. Triple Crown also has a lot of good options when it comes to truly low starch.

Strategy wouldn't be my personal first choice for a low starch option. Just my personal preference.

Grain is just an addon to the feed program anyways. Hay is always the first and foremost. Feed as much as possible. Preferably free choice but definitely as much as you can.

Ditto.  Horses are grazing animals and designed to have forage available all the time.

I'm not familiar with that particular feed, but hay should be fed free choice. It is the one thing they MUST eat as they are indeed grazing animals. Leaving them without hay and/or grass for hours at a time will likely lead to boredom, or even ulcers or hindgut acidosis. Grain is only a small addition to their diet, not a replacement. Most horses will eat at least 20lbs of forage per day.

Hay, especially coastal, should be fed free choice.

Free choice hay and strategy isn't really low starch. Just because it comes in a pellet doesn't mean it's low sugar/starch.

Free choice coastal, 6 lbs alfalfa pellets, and 1.5 lbs of Renew Gold is a good alternative.

I feed about 15-20 lbs of hay per day. I feed square bales and my horses are in a pasture.

Look up nutrena safechoice.

And I agree, free choice coastal. Neither of my horses go without grass or hay in front of them no matter where we are.

Adult horses should get 1.5-2% of their bodyweight in hay per day. that ends up being 15-20 lbs and a lot of horses do not get close to that.

I loved my triple crown, I have used the Senior and COmplete formulas. Both are very low starch and "Complete feeds" so essentially you would not need to feed ANY hay. But this was meant for horses that have no teeth etc, I highly recommend leaving hay in front of them 24-7. Having said all that, all the Nutrena and Triple crown feeds I have access to here in CA are milled in mills that produce medicated cattle feed!!! SO I am not willing to take that risk. SO I switched mine to RENEW GOLD and have not looked back.
