I recently switched the probiotic I've been taking on the recommendation of my OBGYN. TMI for ppl i guess but sorry. I have pH and UTI problems if i even switch soaps or detergent. Well I was taking one already but this new one totally has fixed that problem along with, bloating and regularity problems.

It got me to thinking about horse pro/pre biotics. I've discussed this at length with many ppl and some ppl feel that force is the end all be all. I tend to cycle on and off forco. I know some reining and cutting ppl who are into one called Pro Bi, super expensive and must be refrigerated. Wondering what other options are out there? Do you feel it is needed if you don't have a problem your trying to fix?

I feel if you just wormed or treated for ulcers they are necessary but otherwise are they if you don't have a problem?

I've had my mares on FORCO for awhile now. I love it. If you want to see results, I wouldn't cycle on and off.
I also have a few tubes of EquiOtic and it seems like a good product too.

I feed smoothrun products that have pre/pro biotics that are micro encapsulated to ensure they make it to the hind gut. THe owner of Renew Gold says he doesn't believe in a daily probiotic. SO who knows. LOl But I have great results with smoothrun.

Forco is the greatest prebiotic! :)

I've had really good luck with plain ol cheap ProBios Equine Gel (tube form), 1/2 tube twice daily for 10 days if their appetite is diminished for some reason. I also do probiotics through ulcer treatment, hauling, etc. I only use paste, it's a lot more convenient than finding room in the fridge for a powder.

Curious as to why cycle on and off?

Well when I say cycle I mean like 6 months then two months without. It really depends on what I have in the barn and if I feel they are utilizing their feed or not. I've heard of the Equiotic do you like it? The people i've talked to that use it say they feel its a cheaper version of biosponge....they used it to relieve scours in a foal.

FORCO is a pretty cost effective product. I wouldn't leave 2 months inbetween feeding it. You won't see full results using it that way.

I like the EquiOtic. It's $25 a tube and I have four tubes. After I use them up, I probably won't reorder. It's a bit costly.

I gotcha

i misread what Murphy said anyway.

I thought she was proposing that cycling would show results. But it was the opposite of that.

I was given several tubes of equiotic paste. It's still sitting in my mud room lol! I use forco religiously. Although I did open one of the equiotic when one of my dogs got sick and was throwing up and had diarrhea. It cleared it up almost immediately.

Just a heads up: THere is a new supplement line coming out called FOREFRONT equine. They already have their pre/probiotic paste out and it works well to. Their full line will be out soon.

It cleared my mare up also.

I just squeeze the paste right over my mare's feed and she eats it up. Smells just like apple cinnamon.

We've just added the Blue Bonnet supplement Stride Transform DSI to ours as we are feeding them all Blue Bonnet feeds now.  I'll have to update later with results.

I thought Renew Gold has the prebiotics in it?

Renew Gold does have a prebiotic package in its' formulation, and I feel that it is important to support hind gut function at its' highest possible level. Where probiotics are concerned, I feel that there would not be a need to keep introducing beneficial bacteria to the hind gut if we just stop killing off those that naturally occur there. If you feed a diet that continually introduces excess starches and sugars to the hind gut, you alter the ph and make an unfriendly environment for the bacteria that are there. A Renew Gold diet does not do this, so replacement of lost bacteria is not required. There is a place for probiotics in a Renew Gold diet. That would be post surgery, after an antibiotic treatment, or following a period of super high stress. On a daily basis, however, a healthy horse on a proper diet should be able to easily maintain the proper microbial populations of the hind gut by itself.

I got tired of measuring this and that when I fed and ordering all the different supplements got ridiculous. I feed Platinum Performance. One supplement to order, one to feed and way cheaper than several supplements. It has the prebiotics and probiotics.

I learned about the probiotics and read many articles and it has to be in the billions of CFUs to even get past the mouth and encapsulation there is a catch to that also will have to go back and find my notes.  Nothing compares to Forco many try to copy it because it flat out works.  People that use it never seem to quit because of the results.  Less EPM, ulcers, great feet and haircoats, plus the horses relax and the best part is you feed less grain.

Platinum in fact does NOT have probiotics. Only pre. I asked this question of them directly and they said NO live bacteria in the formula. They do offer a separate probiotic but it's not in the regular or CJ formula.

Actually horses do not need probiotics everyday. Probiotics add bacteria to the gut. Prebiotics feed the bacteria and keeps them growing properly so it is not a big issue that there are not probiotics in the Platinum.

I have horses of my own for over 50 years and have never fed probiotics or probiotics. They have lived to be over 30 years old so that is not really essential to good health. Have rarely had colic.
