| I was hoping someone here could help me in choosing a pad thickness for my husband as I am really not sure what we need. He is a heavier rider and we trail ride 4+ hours. Would thicker be better or not necessarily? |

| He honestly doesn't even have a saddle, we sold his back in the fall and still haven't found something for him. He just needs a new pad too, his other one is so worn out. |

Location: Phoenix | I've always used 1" pads, but told not to get a 1" in the 5 Star. I went with a 7/8" and have been very pleased. Not too thick, not too thin. |

My saddle fits pretty well and I generally use the 1/2" |

Location: Roping pen | Bought a 1" a few years ago. We always use a wool blanket under the pad and the 1" was just to much. Went back to 3/4". Pad by itself was ok...I just like the thinner ones.
IMO, poor saddle fit can not be made better by a thicker pad.
Good luck! |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | When my husband was riding really hard (not a big guy but putting long days on them), we got him a 1 1/4 or a 1 1/2". I use a 1/2" now on most and also have 3/4 and 7/8". |

5 Star has an excellent compression rating. |

Yay! I want to see it when you get it. Mine is at the post office. I had to beg my brother to go get it for me today since he doesn't have to work :) |

| The heavier the rider and the longer you ride, the more protection your horse needs. Therefore the thicker the pad your husband will need. I would suggest calling 5 Star directly since they deal with questions like this everyday! |

Location: North Dakota | I'd recommend getting the saddle first. If your saddle fits properly you should only need a 1/2" pad, 3/4" at the most. People ride in much too thick pads. 1" plus is really not necessary most of the time. |

Location: NC | For long days of riding, I would say at least a 3/4.
I love my 1/2 inch pads but I'm also not in the saddle for hours at a time. I think the thicker pads are a great choice for harder work/longer hours/heavier saddles.
I wouldn't be using a 1/2 inch pad under a roping saddle. |

Location: the high desert | I will do that LRQHS. Saw yours on FB, it looks fantastic!! Now you guys are making me second guess myself. I'm a heavy person but since my saddle fits well I thought I would be ok with a 1/2" but now I'm thinking I made a mistake. I don't ride for more than a hour at a time and it's just arena riding but will probably go on some trail rides here and there... I'm loosing weight and am continuing to loose weight but till I loose it all I'm still heavy so should I get a thicker one? I guess I could always get one of 5 stars 1/4" under pads, then that way I would end up having a 3/4". |

I'm overweight by a good bit and I use a 1/2 inch.
It's more about length & type of riding than weight really. I would give mine a little more padding if I was riding for long hours consistently. My 1/2 inch has served me well. |
