I'm losing sleep over this. I need thoughts. So we have a new boss, been there 4 months. Small company. He's the admin, I'm asst admin.
He gave me a project to do that required going through some confidential emails from an old boss.
An employee that doesn't really like me, walked up behind me and saw what I was working on. She apparently text my new boss, having a fit because I might see confidential emails in there. Um.. I'm the asst admin. Pretty sure I can handle that. Anyhow, to keep her happy, he pulled the project from me.
I'm just sick about it. Why does she get to dictate what work I can and can't do? How do I express how upset I am while staying professional?
Of note, I saw the reason she didn't want me in there.. Total smack talk and bashing me which I'm not surprised. Very two faced employee. Several other things I have seen prove that. I'm just disgusted that he's taking orders from her.
What to do? I'm worried this pattern may continue and I don't get to grow in my career because of it.

Blow it off and keep doing a fantastic job. Your boss obviously thought you were capable of doing the job professionally and well. Just wait for the next project and work even harder. I wouldn't let anyone see that that bothered me. Rise above it!

You could, also, egg her house in the middle of the night and get some great satisfaction.

Not to change the subject, but just have to say, the scene in The Fault In Our Stars where the kids go egg the ex-girlfriends house after she breaks up with the dude because he went blind from his cancer is priceless. Some people just need a good egging.

Ask him for a time to talk about the project. Let him know you appreciated the trust he put in you in handing you the assignment in the first place. I would tell him you understand why you were taken off, but had already seen the "confidential e mails" and he could trust you to remain professional and not let that information change at all how you deal with that employee . Tell him that how you handle this is how you will handle these types of situations in the future and that way he knows he has a valuable professional person to rely on for the next such assignment.
Keep the conversation respectful and professional. Let him see that you can keep the professional and the personal separate.

Please no egging, too hard to clean up. Now TP-ing wouldn't be too bad...or put some peanut butter or marshmallow cream under the door handle of her car. Just remember, you didn't get it from me.   LOL

I can understand your concern. Since it has only been about 4 months that your new boss has been on the job, I wouldn't be worried yet. Give it a little bit of time, keep doing your job and make sure you do it excellent (as I'm sure you will). Remember, what goes around comes around, so she has it coming, and if you are lucky enough you'll get to watch. Sometimes the best revenge is living well...and it really gets people's goats when you don't let things like that bother you.

I am going to be Devils Advocate here, if you were working on confidential emails then the employee should not have had been able to see that you were going thru them.

I agree. Should've kept it quieter, especially if you had already seen that they were about you. Forewarned is forearmed. Maybe he pulled you because he didn't think you can keep important stuff to yourself, since that employee came to him about it after it supposed to be confidential.

I totally agree. However, not much I can do. I'm in an admin/ hr position, but my office is literally part of a hallway. People can walk past either direction. I turned my computer to keep screens hidden best I can. But a person can sneak up on me if they are quiet enough. I've expressed how I think it's not appropriate that I don't have a real office for handling these private issues, but there's not much option right now. No extra space.

It's catch 22. I do confidential stuff, but don't have confidential set up. I've expressed concern over my lack of safe work area, but no one seems to think much of it. There's just no other office space available

They do make screen privacy filters for just this sort of thing. You can get them online.

Also, most computers have Hot Keys to blank the screen or turn on the screen saver quickly. Like sending the mouse pointer to a certain corner.
