Location: Bama | Hi all. I just bought a new horse for barrels. He is a been there done that kind of guy which is what I wanted to get started. I could really use some input on an issue that just happened. I was told to buy a 36" girth for him and choose this one. It's neoprene.
I rode the new guy for the first time yesterday VERY briefly. I didn't notice anything odd during feeding this morning though I wasn't looking either. Just now, I see this. There is a large flap of skin right behind the elbow and also a sore....from maybe 15 min jogging around the field. I'm not sure if I did something wrong or not. He's sensitive when cinching. I saw that when I went to ride him before purchasing and again yesterday. So, I'd do a little...wrap legs...do a little more...put on bridle...finish. Then I picked up his front to stretch. What is it, did I somehow cause this, and does he need to see a vet and/or need just time off?

Location: Sperry, OK | Get some DMSO gel, rub on it twice a day. It will help it to resorb. It will also "move" around on you. When the body starts to resorb it will move side to side or maybe front to back. I had a horse do this years ago. Never figured out what he did for sure, assume he layed down on a foot or something causing a little trauma.

a couple of weeks maybe.. it's been long enough I am not sure.. but I do remember it didn't bother him to ride.

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I would not use that cinch on him again, I have a gelding that the neoprene cinch did the same thing to him, so now I use a fleece cinch. He hated that neoprene too. |

Location: Phoenix | How large is your horse? 36" is pretty long for a cinch. I typically use a 28" - 32". The ends of the girth shouldn't go past their shoulder. It should sit between the point of the elbow and the meaty part of the shoulder. The ring for the tie-down should lay in the middle between his legs. |

Location: Bama | He's 16hh. I took a 32" with me when I went to pick him up because the seller offered to help get my tack adjusted for him. I thought the 32" would have been fine, but she told me to get a 36". ??? When I used the 36", it seemed to be awfully big. I had a hard time getting him cinched. |

Location: Phoenix | 34" might be what you need then. If you want neoprene, there are a few brands better than others, IMO. I think I'm getting a fleece cinch next.... |
