We had gotten a mare last summer that was super sensitive to bug bites. She gets huge welts and will (no joke) run around in circles in the pasture to keep the bugs off. We put her on the various garlic supplements to help keep the bugs away, was head to toe in fly protection, sheets etc. we ended up just keeping her in a stall a lot with a fan because that's how she seemed most comfortable. When talking to someone they mentioned an allergy medication that you can just buy at walmart... guessing it was some kind of anti histamine. Does anyone know what i'm talking about or what dose you give? Or have had any other luck with other things? Bugs are right around the corner.. trying to think of ideas now. Thanks!

There is a gelding in our barn that is really allergic to the no-see-um bugs. He will welt up from head to toe. He seems to do well with a fly sheet on, daily fly spray, and the lady puts him on hydroxyzine when he gets all welted up and it seems to clear them up. I've also heard of using some other medication that you can just buy at the store and use, but I've never done this. I think it was benadryl?

I want to know too because my mare is like this! Her poor jaws look like she has permanent goosebumps! She has places all over her from those bull knats or no-see-ums as most call em ;-) I would think benadryl would work but how much do you give a horse?? anyone tried it?

I too had this dreaded problem, my vet ordered me a jar of 'Equishield
CK HC ' salve. My mare is finally comfortable and can graze in the pasture. All her horrible sites have cleared up with hair growing back. If I remember correctly, this is pretty new on the markets, a small jar cost a little over $20 but you only put on a very thin layer--with protective gloves-- good luck and hope it works for you as well as it is for me..

my poor mare does the same thing only she gets them on the bottom side of her barrel like "belly button" area. My vet had me give her some dex cause she would be really itchy where they were and loved it when u would itchy them for her! she just gets really uncomfortable with them cause it a area she can't itch :/ we go through it every spring to if anyone knows of something else im in the same boat!! I tried some anti-itch cream from like Wal-Mart. I don't kno if it really works or not but it made me feel better to say the least!

I have a mare that the same thing happens to her. Freedom Spot on is what I use and she no longer breaks out and bugs leave her alone. So glad my farrier told me about this product.

Lavender essential oil. Can be applies directly to the bites to take the itch/sting out. Can also be mixed with purification, theives and water and used as a spray to repel bugs.
