Got some disturbing news today and I don't want to give up. My mom was told that the yeast infection in her lungs is terminal, there's nothing they can do.

She's a smoker, 60's, and drinks nothing but Dr Peppers. She has stage 3 kidney failure but it's not been giving her much trouble - she still drinks what she wants.

A couple months back, she was coughing up blood. They did a culture and it came back as yeast that was basically caused by the bleeding in her lungs because it set up a prime environment for that.. She was told by the lung specialist and her PCP that antifungal meds rarely work because they don't actually make it into the cells with the yeast. Other option was an embolism type operation where they basically plug up the blood vessels in the lung that are bleeding. Lots of big risk there and it doesn't always work.

Has anyone ever dealt with this?

I can't help but feel that if she radically changed her diet and worked on her immune system that she could beat this. I've read where the immune system usually fights this off, but in her case it's not.

She's basically at a place of not even wanting to try. Doesn't want to waste the time or the money on treatment. I get that to a certain extent but at the same time what if something simple could make a big difference.

I would get another opinion.. first.. I am sure they are great docs where she went for her diagnosis.. but people make mistakes.. second - i would see if i can find a specialist in a big city near you - pulmonologist.. my grandma got diagnosed at like 70 yrs old with a terminal lung disease.. after seeing some other "specialists" got her on a treatment plan.. she lived til she was 89.. and her lungs were not the reason she passed.. just old age :) but first doc didn't want to do anything/didn't know of any treatments.. and loaded her up on a bunch of meds... the specialist took her off everything that other doc gave her.. anyway.. ALWAYS get anotehr opinoin.. dont feel bad about it.. its her life! AND.. as far as yeast goes - since when can't they treat a yeast infection - sounds to me like she needs a nebulizer - w/some antifungals in it.. if anything it'll stop it in its tracks so it can't progress.. at any rate.. i'd find a second opinion.. sorry you guys got such bad news.. i know its a kick in the gut! But keep your chin up and pray.. the medical world is making strides every day on treatments like this.. hugs!! Prayers being sent! (and tell her to quit smoking! it'll help 1000 percent w/her lungs/circulation)

I have bad fungal infections in my sinuses, not nearly as serious as lungs, BUT I was told there is really nothing they could do except go in and surgically clean them out because they think I am allergic to my own fungus. I went on an alkaline diet- just raw veggies or lightly steamed, a few fruits and protein. No more fungal infection. But as soon as I got off it, it came back. I found the diet by googling. I have no idea if this could help your mom but it maybe something to research. I also take blue green algae and a really good probiotic.
