Questions -

My friend and I are thinking of going.

Do you HAVE to board at south point or can you just haul in if you board nearby?

My friend has a house just 3 miles away from South Point so we were thinking of just boarding elsewhere... Thoughts?

Any advice for those who have gone already?

I have seen people try that in the past and it usually turns into them eventually trying to tie to the warm up arena which is not allowed.

If you are going to have to board anyway you might as well board there

They do not want any horses outside the hotel so its a pain. They want you to pull in to unload in the barn. Not much place unless you park next to the outside warmup arena and park there. Then you can't leave your horse tied to the trailer.
Its really just easier to keep your horse there. We loaded our horses outside one year on the way home because it was so backed up inside and the guard just about had a stroke. I loaded my horse up and drove off and he was cussing me all the way.

You will still need a stall, there is nowhere to tie.

I think you still have to pay for a day stall. If I remember right, you can night tie up to the warm up pen or near your trailer. They do not let trailers stay right there at the hotel. They send you about a block away to park!

Correct, have to buy a stall, cannot stay in your trailer as its not parked close to facility, you MUST rent one of their hotel rooms ( Not sure how they enforce it), no pets, its usually hotter than _____________. I live not to far and never go.

I have been going to this race for years... You do not have to stall your horse there, but you will have to pay for a day stall as there is no tying to a fence/warm up arena/trailer.   Trailers are parked a block away so its easier to share a tack stall with a few girls (same price as a regular stall).  YOU DO NOT HAVE GET THEIR HOTEL ROOM!!  I dont know where that came from, but I have stayed at other hotels as well as my own home (when i was living near vegas).  It is easier to stall your horse there and stay at the hotel, but its not required. If you choose to stay elsewhere, you will just need to get a stall/barn pass from the office in the barn area (this way you can get in to the stall from the hotel).

Mis Trev I believe what everyone is meaning is you can not stay in an LQ on their premises or in their trailer parking area.  They do have security there so I'm sure they would notice if anyone was staying overnight in their trailer.  The rates they offer at South Point are extremely reasonable using the NBHA code and the convenience of being all in one place, being able to watch the videocast from your room and never having to go outside, in what for some of us is an extreme temperature change for that time of year, makes it all very well worth it.

Thanks everyone for the responses! We opted to buy the stall and we will be staying at her husbands house (which is only 3 miles away! )

We are both very, very excited. Not expecting much cause the horse we run is 4D/5D at the moment with only starting competing in January :P
But we are all for the experience and definitely plan on coming back next year too once we are both better!

:D
