Occasionally just browsing I've seen pictures of the Mattes western pads pop up. I'm not planning on buying one anytime soon, but they are darn sure cool looking. Would you ever buy a sheepskin pad for your western saddle?

Having used Mattes pads for years on my Hunters and Jumpers, I really like them and could see myself buying one.

They are primarily focused to English disciplines. They are nice pads. I'm not crazy about the design/shape for the western disciplines.

I am also not crazy about the shape, looks funky to me. Probably wouldn't buy one.

Β  They have normal shape pads too. The one with the swoop is just one style. I'm more concerned with the fact that it's sheepskin.

My rope sits on the back of my ranch saddle, that pad would probably keep it from getting all sweaty so yes i would use a pad cut like that.

Why are you worried about the sheepskin?

Yeah, I am assuming that is what she meant. My horse likes the wool fleece better than wool felt so I didn't really understand her concern. I may well be missing something though.

No, no I'm not worried worried. I am just trying to express thay my point of this post had NOTHING do do with the SHAPE of the pad, just the fact that it's all sheepskin rather than wool felt or other more typical western pad materials. I've used sheepskin pads for english before, but those have panels with a ton of padding in them to begin with so it's a whole other ball of wax. I just don't know if it would provide enough protection for their backs.

I would think it would get all sweaty and matted down - especially now during shedding season.

I actually have one similar not sure if it is the same brand

Mine has medical grade sheepskin, the medical grade sheepskin doesn't matte (sp) like the non medical grade.

I have used mine legging horses up at home I'll ride 2-3 horses with it and have to wash it every few weeks. I throw mine in the washing machine and wash with special sheepskin soap.

They don't compress much and I would say it would be like riding in a 1/4" five star for thickness comparison.

My pad is actually a nice pad to ride my horses in, but you do have to have a well fitting saddle, you cannot get by with this pad and an ill fitting saddle as you can with the csi pads

Good to know. My saddle does fit well and only requires about a 1/2" pad.
