Rice bran or Cool Calories for adding a little extra bloom in the top line and hip? I've never used cool calories but have been reading up on it and I see it has good reviews everywhere I have looked. My horse tends to be more on the nervous/anxious side and I'm trying to avoid anything that will give him that edge that we have been trying to avoid this spring.

Cool Calories. It is inexpensive, lasts a long time, doesn't require a huge dose for great results, the horses clean it up in their feed, and it is easy to store since it takes up so little space. I am a big fan. Not only that, but it also has much higher fat--99%.

I've used both and have decided Cool Calories works best for me. Higher fat content and feed less. Cool Calories has not made any of my horses hot. The only thing you need to watch is that if you feed to much they can get diarreha, so start with the recommended amount and adjust accordingly until their systems become used to it. I have 2 TB's on it and an Appendix and they look very nice.

I use cool calories and have had great results. You can get a lot of places but I order from hayneedle.com. They have the best price.

If that doesnt work for you try T.H.E muscle mass. Two weeks and the muscling on my 5 yos topline and loin is impressive to say the least.

Thanks everyone! I think I will give the cool calories a try. I tried T.H.E. MM last year and he turned into a fire breathing dragon. I had the hoof, focus, ulcer prevent, and joint added. I really wanted it to work for him, so if the cool calories doesn't get the job done I may try it again this year and see what happens.

I like both, I have used cool calories and had great results. I did have to wet his grain and mix to get him to eat it.

I was feeding just renew gold and rice bran to my mare, but with that she wasn't at the weight that i wanted. I added Cool Calories and MAN has she bloomed. She got 2 scoops of it a day for quite some time but now shes gotten a little chunky so shes backed down to 1 scoop . If i need to take away more from her, I'll be taking away the rice bran.

Doesn't Renew Gold have rice bran in it already?

I love Cool Calories but stopped using it because it had BHT in it. Not sure if it still does, but my horses looked great.

What is BHT?

a preservative that has been linked to causing cancer. Not sure if others care about that kind of stuff but I lost a horse that was too young to cancer and I am determined to prevent my others from going this way. Also unsure of how well a horse's intestine processes it, as the "human" food that it can be found in is low grade and I know makes me sick. (Think Spaghetti-O's, meat sticks, etc.)

Maybe, but I asked Win about it and he recommended to put her on stabilized rice bran. I did it for another horse and it worked wonderfully, but this mare is a little bit more of a hard keeper.

Thanks for the info . I am trying to stay away from that kind of stuff.

These are two, or maybe three or even four very different products. Cool Calories is a nearly pure fat supplement. They state that the fat source is vegetable fat. Could be corn oil, soy bean oil or some combination of these or others. This may well be a fine product, but I'd like more specific information. If your goal is simply bulk calories, this product would provide that. I can't speak to how digestible this form or blend may be. Rice Bran is either stabilized, raw or partially processed. If stabilized it is 20% fat. That means it is 80% other things, and those can be significant in the overall health of a horse. The protein quality is very high and the level is about 14%. It is also one of the highest natural sources of some of the most potent Vit Es' found in nature. Plus, it is the natural source for gamma oryzanol which is proven to improve lean muscle mass. Raw rice bran is rancid, and the Vit E is basically gone because of this. The gamma oryzanol remains as do the basic calories from the fat. Partially processed rice bran would be considered an extended shelf life version of raw bran. How long that might last, and how old it is when you get it is anybody's guess. So, comparing these really depends on just what you are trying to do by adding them to your diet. Both CC and Stabilized Rice Bran will add bloom and coat condition. In theory, CC should add more weight if you feed enough of it and that is what you are after. Stabilized rice bran will add lean muscle mass because of the Gamma Oryzanol that will not be in the CC. I do not feed raw rice bran because of the rancidity issue, so can't really comment there.

What are the added benefits of feeding Renew Gold instead of just stabilized rice bran or in my case I am currently feeding the Omega Max from Triple Crown?
