I seen some people have halters on their babies when they are 2 days old and other wait till they are weaned. Just curious what everyone is doing with their babies?

If I can be there when they are born, I put the halter on that day.

I truly wish that mine would magically lead by putting the halter on. Yours must be a lot smarter than mine.

as soon as possible. They tend to fight a bit for the first 10 minutes or so, but settle down.

My mares foal on pasture & stay out until weaning. So I don't halter break until I bring the babies in to wean them.

Asap! So much easier and less chance they can get hurt. Easier to do it with their mothers to to teach to stop and to give to pressure

I usually wait until after they are weaned. We foal out early mares in the barn so I could put a halter in them if I wanted to. But we turn them out to pasture as soon as mares are bred back so they don't get handled again until weaning. I don't think it matters when you do it, so long as you do it correctly.

After they are weaned, I like to imprint, handle without halters when they are with mom, then I don't get hard to catch horses.

I also find halter breaking takes me less time after weaning versus being on mom, mine don't have as much fight or panic, but have more trust and respect.

2 years old. Once we are ready to start riding them unless we are selling them then we will halter break earlier.

I've got a yearling that has never had a halter on. She was sick as a baby and got handled a lot, so she is very friendly. But when we weaned her we left her in the pasture with her buddies and brought her dam home. So she won't be halter broke until this fall when we start her under saddle. Of course if she was for sale I'd have taken care of that before now, but since she's not going anywhere I haven't been worried about it!

I put halters on the day they're born. I get them used to having ropes EVERYWHERE on their body. When they're 1-2 days old I put a lead on them & have someone walk mom while I walk with little pressure on the lead of the foal. When they're around a week old is when I train them to lead away from mom. I find this way easier & less stressful to the foal then waiting till they're older & having a life & death tug of war lol

Asap. The mama and the baby generally go to the vet for a rebreed at around 8 days.

We used to put one on asap after they were born... But we taught them to respond to the neck rope first then used that in conjunction to teach them to lead by the halter.

I've had two so far. The first one we waited till he was about 4 months. He was easier to halter, but was slower to learn pressure, etc. The second one we halter broke at about a month old. He would throw fits about it at first, but was quick to learn to lead, pressure, etc. He settled in pretty quick.

We don't put halters on them until the first week or two, but we handle them and work on leading, rubbing them with ropes and sheets the whole time they are with momma.
