| Came across a nice 4 year old thoroughbred mare who was never raced but her sire won $4,374,590 and was inducted into the racehorse hall of fame. What are your opinions on thoroughbreds barrel racing? |

Location: Midwest | I love tbs, but most don't have the sprinting speed/acceleration to be top barrel horses. Of course, there are exceptions.
Tbs usually are better suited for jumping and eventing than barrels. Jmo |

Off topic...but most riders don't have the ability to even ride the top barrel horses. |

Location: IL | I'm currently patterning a TB mare that I got as an almost 5 year old and will be seasoning her this season. When I got her, she was just track broke and I spent over a year adjusting her to normal horse life and putting a good foundation on her. I will say that not all TBs can make barrel horses, however I think that can also be said for horses in general, no matter the breed. I will also say that TBs are not for everybody.
I was very specific when looking for a TB as a barrel prospect. I looked for one that was between 15h and 15.3h, was lower hocked than your average TB, shorter pasterns, shorter backed, low tail set, and I wanted one that really reached up underneath themself when stepping/moving. I also made sure the horse I chose had outs on the track, as they are exposed to so much while there, but not so many outs that there were any physical or mental issues. I looked for a horse that couldn't go the distance but was more of a sprinter. My mare I have now, she can get rolling in just a matter of a few strides. I looked into her racing videos, she had 17 starts, and every start she had she was first out of the gate and would go straight to the front and hold the lead until about the 1/2 mile mark. Then after that she would begin to fade, just couldn't go the distance.
I've been around TBs my whole life (my mom came from the hunter jumper world & that's where I started) but this is my first OTTB that I've taken to the barrels and I don't think I'll use anything else after my experience with this mare.
Just do your research on the pedigree and definitely have a lameness exam done. :)

Location: Alberta, Canada | I bought an ottb last fall. 2010 daughter of Red (sire of Christina Richman's "Stitch") and out of a daughter of snowbound. The ONLY reason I bought her is because my 1D mare and equine love of my life is a Red daughter. I passed her by a few times when the opportunity came up because she's out of a Thoroughbred mare rather than a QH.
I've had her since September and let me tell you, this filly is the most talented individual I've ever swung a leg over. She has more natural front to rear balance than any horse I've ever ridden, she has a natural comfort in small driving circles and is crazy quick in short bursts (she won all her money in sprinting ;)).
she looks like a qh with her big booty too :)
Not saying that every TB is suited to barrels, but some are built to do the job, perhaps better than some qh.
Point is, I'll never knock a TB again. This mare will take me everywhere I want to go, regardless of her papers.

Location: Idaho | I am currently starting an OTTB as well..and he is the best horse I have ever ridden! He's older, 9, but he was a give away when they couldn't get him to run anymore, my dad had trained him in previous years and about three years after my dad sold him, he was given to me. I still believe to this day with the right trainer he would run just as well as he did for my dad. I got him last August and gave him the winter off to fatten him up and let him be a horse. I have ridden him in the mountains, roped off of him, and started him on barrels and he's never made a bad move. He's very level headed and has so much ability. Wouldn't trade him for anything! |

Truth (and duh, lol)
resale on unproven JC horses seems to be a challenge, though.
i would not go out looking for one as a barrel horse, but I'd not be averse to riding one if I liked the build. |

Location: Central Texas | I love my OTTB. 1D... meh... probably not but I'm not a 1D rider so I'm ok with that. Having always owned cow bred QH's he was a and still is a learning curve for me... Very different style of running and turning than anything I had ever owned before but I would definately consider another one. |

Location: Ohio | I run with a woman running an OTTB. She is hitting in e 1D locally and the 2D at super shows. Oh yeah, she still lopes her to the first lol. That mare is kind of a freak. She works off her hind end like no TB I have ever seen.
That being said she is worth about half of what she would be with AQHA papers, but then again she doesn't have a ton invested in her as she was one of their horses that didn't cut it on the track.
I have thought about picking one up to start as a back up horse. I have a seem a lot of nice looking prospects. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | I've learned not to pass any horse up just because of their papers or because they aren't AQHA. I've missed out on too many great horses from being prejudice towards TBs. Mainly towards Paints and Apps tho. I learned my lesson the hard way: when I got beat a few times by ones I over looked!
Regardless, If she fits you, she is easy to get along with, and if she has speed and heart, go for it. I like her build. |
