My mother has an older Hereford Tex Tan barrel saddle, probably at least 30-40 years old. The leather is still gorgeous on it but the tree is broken. Have no clue how it got broken as we literally cinched it up on a horse one day and the gullet was sitting on his withers. When you put it upside down and press on the saddle, you can see it flexing in the gullet.

My mom loves this saddle and so we'd love to get it repaired or replaced. I called Tex Tan and the lady there told me that Rocking Chair Saddlrey in Yoakum, TX could do that kind of work for us. I called the guy today but I need to get the model number off the saddle for him, to be able to tell me if he can do it or not.

Are there any other options out there?

Are you having trouble finding the model number?
If so, years ago, Tex-Tan used to mark their saddles as such……….Raise the fender and look for three sets of numbers stamped on the fender/stirrup leather. The one set of four numbers with a letter at the end in the model number, another set of four numbers is the month and year of production, the final set of numbers is the serial number. If they have been worn down, take a picture of the saddle and email it to Tex-Tan. They should be able to tell you the model #. Any reputable saddle shop should be able to take the saddle apart and get the dimensions to have a “tree” made but it won’t be cheap….custom saddle trees run in the $250+ range and then you have the labor costs.

Hmm, not sure if this saddle is just older or what, but the numbers are different.

It says Hereford 981I
And Tex Tan of Yoakum 115-41613

Anyone have any clue what these numbers mean? Kinda curious on when the saddle was made. My mom has had it for a long time, and she bought it used.

I might have to call Tex Tan and see if they can decipher the numbers for me. I'm in touch with the saddle maker they referred me to .... but he wanted me to ship the saddle to him FIRST without any indication of how much it might cost. I told him I'd at least like a ballpark figure of some kind, before I spend $100-$200 on shipping it back and forth. His wife is going to try to check for me.
