Location: Oklahoma City OK | Just curious...some of you might know...when a horse scratches out of such a big race as the KY Derby....does the jockey get any kind of stipend? After all, they might have given up another mount to ride the one that scratched, thereby eliminating any source of income for that race...??? Surely they have expenses coming in to Louisville from somewhere else....just wondering... |

Location: California | Big races like that you are reimbursed for expenses as well as get a flat fee. That's how it was with my husband. |

Location: Texas | I'm curious too... I can completely understand the jockey not getting on another horse, but man that would be a bummer.
Another random question, what is the value of these horses PRIOR to the KY Derby? How does their value increase after based on their finish?
Also, if a horse scratches from a big race, like the KY Derby, how does that effect the future of that horse?
I'm just curious, don't know enough about horse racing to fill a beer top. Also, I dont know why any horse scratched, so excuse my ignorance please :) |

Location: California | Also, you will see the bigger riders not get on any horses before the big race. Like when a jock like Mike Smith goes to Oaklawn or somewhere to ride in a big race, he will not get on any horses before. They don't want to risk the chance of getting hurt before the big one. Younger and less experienced or hungry jocks will get on horses but my husband wouldn't when he had to travel for a big race. At least he wouldn't after he won the Preakness. |

Location: California | They will scratch for various reasons. Either the trainer or track vet will scratch a horse either for illness or even for a horse that might have a little swelling in an ankle for example. Sometimes the horses will spike a fever so they will scratch. Sometimes the horse will be scratched at the gate due to injury or if the jock doesn't like how the horse is warming up. |

Your husband won THE Preakness? Get out of town! Is he famous? |

Location: California | Yes, he's famous and also famous for his drinking. He's OK now but I will tell you that the racetrack can screw up alot of people. He was riding races when he was like 8. He won the Preakness in 1982 when he was 16. He went wire to wire with Shoemaker running second. He was on Hee Haw and on T.V. They made such a big deal out of the 16 year old jock who wore a cowboy hat in the winner's circle. Jocks are like rock stars on the track. Everyone wants to be their friend or just be with them. I can tell you that 90% of them have dabbled in drinking or drugs. Jack never did drugs but so many others have. Just this morning I was ranting at my shoer "How the hell can they put a cokehead into the Hall of Fame? What kind of message does that send? They better put PVal in then!" I see jocks put on a pedastel and I don't get it. OMG the women. So stupid. They wait for these guys to come out of the jock's room. You're married to a rider, you have to keep your eyes and ears open. Women throw themselves at them. Just like bucklebunnies who chase after bullriders. Pathetic. |

Location: California | Jack mentored Mike Smith. Mikey was Jack's roommate when he was starting out. I can tell you that what you see is the real Mike. He has such a smile and a nice guy. He's just a cutie. Gary Stevens is an outstanding horseman and one of the greatest. Kent Desormeaux is another great horseman and a good guy. I'll be pulling for Gary and Mike tomorrow.

That is way too cool! Can I have his autograph? Seriously. That is awesome!
I understand 100% how you feel about the "stars" who not only have a history of drugs and alcohol but who STILL use! I could name off so many pros who would lose so many fans, if their fans knew the truth. Rough stock and ropers. It blows my mind how much of a front they put on for the public. |

Location: California | I'll have him sign a jockey card (like a baseball card) and send to you. People buy stuff on Ebay and send to him to sign. |

Location: California | Also, the end of this month there is a group called Jockeys and Jeans that is having a benefit auction in Shelbyville, Indiana the end of the month. The proceeds go to the Premanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. I have donated a pair of jock pants from Jack and from Gary Stevens. Kent Desormeaux is supposed to send me a pair of his pants for the auction but I have to send him some Dungeness crab as an exchange. The auction is supposed to go online. Both Jack and Gary's pants have their names sewn into them.

Location: Texas | Too neat! I can only imagine how much they will sell for. Heck, I'd buy his left sock he wore yesterday! Lol But honestly, winning THE Preakness at 16 is a HUGE accomplishment! That is an imaginable dream. Pat him on the back for me!Â
