I have a 8yr mare that was run through a barb wire fence. She lost most of her muscle in her left leg. In her forearm the brachialis radial carpal. She can barely walk with her left leg very weak.

I ordered some bevs salve and she's at the vets now on high doses of antibiotics and pain meds.

What else can I do to help her recover ??

My roping gelding was hit by the mail lady on our dirt road, it took every bit of 2 years for him to get nearly "normal".
Lots of time, movement restriction, antibiotics and pain management.
Good Luck and prayers for your mare.

I used Nutrawound on a couple and was really impressed with how well they healed.

My understanding is

She won't be able to move her leg if the radial nerve has been damaged, I had one that was dragging her toe due to damage to the radial nerve, she healed great.

I have one mare who had her forearm bit out by a cougar, all the way to the bone, but never injured the radial nerve, it took 4 months she completely healed with hydro therapy, pressure wrapping, and ointment. You can see a scar, some white hairs, and all the muscle filled in.

We had a long rehab program the adhesions causes her to go lame when worked, I thermotex end her twice a day, stretched her after the thermotex, and hand walked.

I applied back on track no bows when stalled.

If I had to do it over I would apply back on track no bows on during the healing period in hope to reduce the adhesions.

My mare came back and I have ran her two years and counting without a lame step

You have serious decision to make, will she ever get OK, how much pain is she in?  You need to look at what is best for the mare.

My mare was 3 when she found the only 20 ft of barbed wire on the property. She destroyed her forearm. We completely cut out 2 muscles. But she was able to walk on it and after 3 days of stall rest she had to be put on a 30 day sedative. She compeletely healed up even though a couple vets told me to just breed her. It took awhile to figure out how to bandage her properly but we did it. But if you have nerve damage that's a whole different ball game. I can send you pictures via text or facebook messenger (I'm on my phone and dunno how to upload photos and they are GRAPHIC)

Cover the wounds in lime after cleansing and rinse. This keeps any flies and bugs out of the wound. Keeps infection low and helps with pain. Double doses vitamin E and C promotes quick healing. If you have access to a magnetic blanket and boots put it on.

My gelding got both back legs hung up in barbwire Feb 13th. The lady I sent him to to rehab him wrapped him twice a day. Scrubbed the scab off daily and applied Bannxx and Wonderdust to help with proud flesh. He had limited movement to help it heal and was one bute and antibiotics for the first 2 weeks. I also put him on THE Nutrawound and feel that helped also.  One leg is completely healed and the other still has about 1/2 inch until it is closed. I agree with an earlier poster. You need to consider the LONG term health/happiness of your horse. It sounds like your horse got in to it worse than my gelding. Hugs and Good Luck!!

She absolutely can recover from this...may take time but she can recover.  I have a gelding that was run through barb wire when he was a year old or less, had what you'd think would be major issues because of loss of muscle in chest...leg wounds etc...no one would buy him...we bought him as a long yearling and he went on to be a solid 1D barrel horse at even the biggest shows....never say never!

I have another gelding that was hit on the hwy (side swiped) broken ribs, other injuries and a huge laceration at the stilfe..laid wide open, took about 2 months to gradually heal that laceration up...now no scar even of it....7 months later I won our State NBHA Show, Seniors class out of 113 riders against some tough horses...doctor her, think positive and don't give up on her!

Love this positive post. I agree to do what is best for her, but please don't give up on her too early

My uncle had a mare run through 12 barb wire fences. Her entire chest was missing and her legs looked like they went through a blender. Covered her in lime peeled off daily cleansed in soap water and covered in lime again. She heeled just fine. She had no blemishes and looked completely normal.also want to add straight egg whites to cover the wound works wonders too as well as the raw honey.the vet in not the only cure. Jmo

Natural honey then wrap. I did this with a dog - could see the bone. Didn't even leave a scar

Why pick the scabs off ? Seem like it would slow the process down and scar worse.

It does have a smell but I assume ita flesh that's dying off. No temperature.
