Location: MD | Hey! I'm going to try to start taking my horse into some SMALL open shows and taking through some english w/t/c classes. So I'm looking for an english saddle I can use daily to improve my riding and take to a show (so nothing too beat up and embarrassing!)
I'm going through the saddles on stateline tack, are wintecs still acceptable? I'm looking for a low budget, all around saddle!(id rather spend an arm and a leg on a new barrel saddle!)
I know we have a few girls that do some of this stuff regularly. and I need to know a great place to get some good tall boots as I haven't been in the english game for at least 100 years ;) |

Location: Oklahoma | Wintecs will work for what you are doing... also there are english tack trader pages on facebook that have some good deals. As far as tall boots... do you have any idea what size you'll need? Here is the Ariat sizing chart. I used to work for a HUGE english tack store... feel free to message me and I'll help with what I can!

I agree with this. You can get some really old (but nice) name brand saddles or next to new Circuit/Collegiate etc that look new but are in that $300 price range. I love that page and haven't seen near the tack scamming drama there as I have on some other tack pages. |

I have an older Stubben Siegfried that I have had for 15+ years. I love it to pieces and looks brand new. There are about a million used ones out there....highly recommend. |

The majority will take a wide tree in an english saddle. Many saddles have gone to exchangeable gullets in the saddles which is awesome. I love them! It takes a few minutes to change a gullet. |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | I have a Collegiate eventing all purpose saddle that I have had for 20 years and I love it. I ride my barrel horse in it a good bit, and have shown local Hunter in it a lot. Ideally for true Hunter classes they really like to see a jumping saddle with a little more forward flap but you can get away with an all purpose. SS Tack (Schneiders) has English saddles just for QH. Their lower end line is trust-worthy too. You want to watch out for some of the cheaper imports. Dovers also has a good selection.
In a pinch, you can use paddock boots and half chaps at lower level shows. I wouldn't advise the boots with the back zipper if you have a bigger calf muscle. If they're the least bit snug the zippers bust pretty easily. |

| I bought one off Ebay! I think I paid like $200 for it. It's used and older, but still looks decent. |

Location: Mountains of VA | Since you are here in the east, I would not recommend buying a Wintec. Even at the local shows, hunters are pretty competitive. There are a lot of good used saddles on the market. You need a close contact hunter saddle, not an all purpose or a forward jumper saddle. Try virginiaequestrian.com plus there are lots of places in Maryland to buy used saddles. |

Location: Kansas | Have you checked out what they are wearing and how formal the classes are at your small open shows? Is it a show that has various classes, western rail, hunt seat rail, etc or a hunter show with some flat classes? That could make a difference in what people are wearing and using. My quarter horses have always taken a medium tree. A wide would be to big. Is there any place to go try some hunt seat saddles on, both for your and your horses fit? There are decent tall boots that are cheaper than Ariats.
Collegiantes (sp?) and Steubens are good saddles to consider. Old Crosbys can be found for about $200. They were a good saddle and made it easy to get the correct body position as opposed to some newer, low end saddles that are in the stores now. They don't have the padded knee flaps or blocks which are popular. Mine is probably at least 25 yrs old, I have taken care of it and it's in great shape. I still switch off and ride in it occasionally instead of my main hunt seat saddle

| Be sure that you get a large enough seat or it will put you too far forward and you cannot get the proper seat for judged events. |

I had one that I loved. I sold it about ten years ago and have regretted it ever since!
Just like buying a barrel saddle, buy the best quality you can afford, used quality is better than cheap new. |

| I show all around, so my BIG mare is shown in everything, and of all events other than speed, she does best in hunter under saddle (never figured out why, but she has beautiful english movement). I use a Crosby saddle that I bought for $100 at Hoosier Horse Fair about 6 years ago. It's fantastic, awesome brand and fits her great.
DO NOT get tall boots that are not zipper in the back. You will hate yourself forever. Go a bit more expensive for the zipper types because they are so easy to put on. The slide on's are the devil. |

Location: North Dakota | Be warned that Wintecs have flat trees so if your horse has any curve to it's back, they probably won't fit. Thorowgood is usually considered to be a better synthetic brand, but you'd have to try and find a brown one. You could use the synthetic but for showing at any level, leather, even well used, is better than synthetic. My favorite online places for english stuff are smartpak, dover, and some others. |
