We have a mare that did not turn out to be quite what we were hoping. Still solid 2D/3D horse but not the open 1D horse we were thinking. We plan on selling her, but my question is does a bred 2D/3D mare have more worth?

We invested quite a bit into her, so of course we would like to get as much as we can. I haven't sold a horse in quite some time, so would love some input.

Depends on the stud probably.

There's also the fact that some people just don't like dealing with foals.

I think a solid barrel horse is worth more than a broodmare. As far as broodmares go...it depends on who she is bred to.

For me no. But I don't want to deal with a colt. The cost associated with the raising of a foal and the time loss on the mare is an instant turn off for me.

I assume we are talking brood mares.

But to answer the question there are about 2% of the standing studs today that would add value for me.

The other 98% would probably keep me from buying at all unless stupid cheap

I think you are going to limit the pool of prospective buyers to only those that want a foal by the stud you breed her to.  IMO, leave her open.

I would think a bred 2D/3D mare would bring less than a 2D/3D mare ready to run. I, personally, wouldn't pay much for a bred 2D/3D broodmare.

How is she bred?

Who would you bred her to?

^^^^^depending on these questions she could be worth $5k or $30k

Most of the time I don't want a broodmare unless she is a money earner herself. Exception would be like an injuried daughter of Tres Seis, PYC Paint Your Wagon, etc....

Unless she is bred well and your willing to shell out money for a good stud fee I'd say to cut your loses and sale as a solid 2/3D horse.

If she is solid 2/3D in tough company she can be a 15k mare or more. Depends on who your running these 2D times against.

I think there is greater value as a barrel horse than a broodmare. There is a good market for a solid 2D/3D horse. And right now is a very good time to be selling. Lots of people looking for a step up horse, or just something that they can take to a jackpot on the weekends and have fun. In general, the value of a broodmare is not all that high unless she is a spectacular performer or producer and has an excellent set of papers.

I agree with everyone else. If she isn't blown up and is easy to run, I wouldn't bred her. 1d horses aren't for everyone. Someone just starting out or looking for a kids horse would probably love her.

Granting that she is sound and sane, I would purchase a 2d/3d mare that I could potentially breed later if i really wanted to, but I would not purchase a bred mare. Pre-breeding severely narrows your market and besides, a horse that's running is always worth more than a brood mare.

If you are selling her as a barrel horse, No... Who wants to bring one back, both mentally and physically after she has a foal.
If you are selling her as a brood mare, the only market you'll have is fans of the stallion you use.

Open, all the way...

SAME HERE - not into babies - AT ALL. I probably wouldn't even look at her if she was bred because I don't have the facility, time, knowledge about babies.

Everyone would love a 1 d horse but some people
(like me) are happy with/or would be
thrilled to have a 2-d 3-d horse.
There is a definitely a market! Don't breed! Sell!
