Location: Bama | How much crap are you willing to put up with from a seller before you say nevermind and look elsewhere?
I found a broodmare I REALLY want and was ready to buy. I asked the seller if they had current coggins and health certificate to travel. They said no. They told me I should be fine; they've never been stopped. I said I needed them. I asked weekly if they had gotten coggins and HC for a MONTH! I got excuse after excuse, "I'm going to get them this day", "couldn't make it but I took my other mare", and they even blamed the vet for messing up twice. They finally text the other day and said they had the coggins. I asked about the health certificate, and they said they've never needed one and that their vet who owns and races QHs said I didn't need one to cross state lines. They would get one for me if I paid another $100 for their time. I guess the month I've waited doesn't matter. I told them I was going to have to pass since that wasn't the price we agreed on, and it should have been done when coggins was drawn.
Was I wrong for that?
The more I think about, I just want to go pick her up and drive the extra 45min to haul her to current owners vet myself. She's priced very reasonable and honestly I would have paid the extra $100 for all paperwork if it would have been mentioned up front and been no hassle. What would you do? I realize it's probably too late to ask if I can still come get her. However, I'm willing to make a fool of myself and try if I was in the wrong.

| As a buyer I have always had to pay for health certificate and coggins, there have been a few times I had to pay the mileage for the people to take the horse to the vet
It all depends on how bad you want the horse |

This. Are you paying for the coggins/HC? |

I should add that I wait until I am 90% sure I have a buyer before I get the health so I know what destination to put on it. Most vets will write a health off the coggins if it hasn't been a long time since they have been in and it is only $20.

All I have ever needed was a updated coggins, the only time I need a health certificate was at big shows, but here in Texas I dont think you even need health papers just coggins. |

Location: Four Corners Colorado | I'll pay for coggins, health and brand inspections but not without a non-refundable deposit on the horse, I've had too many people flake out and then I'm out the cash. If I'm selling something I pull the coggins when I start advertizing them. If you really want the horse and the brand inspection and coggins are done I'd just go pick it up during business hours and get the health certificate yourself. |

| A health certificate requires a final destination. As a seller I always have current coggins on any horse I have for sale. I've sold many. I've never had to produce a health cert except the colt who went to Canada. If the mare has a current coggins and is going from her first home to your personal property with no stops between, you really shouldn't need a health cert. |

Location: Bama | I told her I needed both the coggins and health certificate when we agreed on a price. She never mentioned anything about them being additional, and she never mentioned charging for the coggins she did get. I guess because she thinks I don't need a health certificate to cross state line 'per her vet' that I would have to pay for her time and fuel for the health certificate only. It just irritated me because she wouldn't have to take the time if she would have done as I asked to begin with. Had she said something about me paying for them in the beginning, I would have done so no questions asked. |

That's my thought on it! I bought a horse end of March. I went to see him one Sunday, they updated everything that week, and I picked him up the following Sunday. Super smooth transaction. |

Location: Oregon | Well since she didn't bring it up you probably should have. Either way it's too late now. So if you really want her go get her. I wouldn't worry about the HC either. How far do you have to haul and through how many states? |

Eh, I wouldn't worry about it. I've showed them 3 year old coggins certificates and they didn't know what they were looking at and waved me through. |

Location: Oregon | Depends on the bloodlines. I'd stick with bloodlines that are proven producers of barrel horses. Once you've had a genetically engineered barrel racing horse you will never ride anything else. Reduce your odds of failure, increase your odds of success. |
