Location: Central Texas | So apparently I either didn't get my window all the way up or the door didnt close good on my car. We have had some really bad storms here for the last couple of weeks. I noticed a couple of days ago that my car kinda had a funny smell. I looked around and didn't see anything in the car that would smell bad. I actually don't have much in the car. Well the smell was worse the next day and I started looking under the seats...put my hand on the passenger floorboard as I was bending down and the whole carpet on that side was soaking wet. I got the shop vac out and sucked all the water out. The seats are leather so the only thing wet was the floor. Smell has gotten BAD. I have put the smell good febreze vent clips in there and they are doing nothing. I tried stuffing dryer sheets under the seats...still not better. I tried leaving baking soda in there hoping it would absorb the smell. NOTHING is working. This is my new Mustang...I'm so upset. It smells like sour/ spoiled something. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do to get the smell out? |

Location: Kansas | I would take one of those carpet cleaners and clean it with a vingar, water, and blue dish soap mix...making sure to suck all the water out of it. Then febreeze the heck out of it. I bought a couch last weekend and it reeked of smoke, I used that mix with a carpet cleaner machine and worked great!!!
Moral of the story.....always roll up your windows LOL |

Vinegar...good idea!! LOL The window was not down that you could see. I had pushed the button to roll it up and I'm guessing that I let go of the button a fraction of a second too soon and it didn't get seated good. It's the only explanation that I can come up with...otherwise it's a mystery how the water got in there. |

Location: Winging It in KY | Are you sure that you left the window open or did not get the door closed. The smell could be coming from coolant that could have leaked out of your heater core. The HVAC box is under the dash on the passenger side. Just a thought. |

How do you check if it's the heater core? The car is a 2012 Mustang. The floor is dry now but we have had some really warm days and it's just making the smell worse. Will the heater and AC still work if the heater core leaked?

Location: Winging It in KY | The A/C will still work because that runs through the evaporator core which is also in the HVAC box. If the heater core is leaking you will eventually not have heat. Check your coolant (antifreeze) level in your vehicle and keep an eye on it. Did the water on the floor have a filmy or oily feel to it? If so, then it may have been coolant. If it happens again for no reason, then I would get it checked out. Also, if you have been having bad storms and lots of rain, does your car have a sun roof? If so the drains can get clogged with debris and they too will leak on the floor instead of out the bottom of the car. Just another idea to throw out there. |

Thanks!! I will check that out! I do know that every morning when I go to work I always roll down the passenger window so I can check animals in the pasture as I drive out. But it is very weird that it was only wet on the passenger floor board in the front...not the back and no visable signs that water got on any seats. |

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | We had the same problem. There is a gasket under the hood up by your dash board that needs to be resealed. You can do it yourself. But you will need to find out what to reseal it with from a local NAPA and if lucky get someone to show you where. When worn water from the windshield seeps in leaving you with that smell. |
