Yesterday a customer came in looking for antibiotics for sick jacks he had had shipped out from OK. They were in Bishop, the hauler had called and told him they were in pretty rough shape, lost weight, not feeling good, etc. I asked some questions and the customer mentioned that one of the jacks had been being treated for EHV 1 I think he said a little over a month ago. I do not know specifically where in OK he had them shipped from, the shipper he used or anything but just wanted to give everyone a heads up down in that area. Unforturnately it also sounded like this customer was planning on going and picking these animals up and bringing them home up near Red Bluff.

I have no idea, I would think they need health papers too but this gentleman clearly stated that one of the Jacks he had shipped had been being treated last month some time and that the shipper was concerned that none of them looked very good at the drop off which was Bishop. Is this Bishop Mule Days going on right now?

Health papers are a joke and just a way to generate money as an animal can be fine the day they are examined and the next day be sick. Then we have the vets that just give out health papers without ever examining an animal.

It's just scary what can happen and even knowing how people will end up taking chances with their animals and others animals.

Goodness this scares the crap out of me!

Yes Mule Days is going on right now as we speak. It started yesterday. I know that there is a vet on site during the day. I am wondering if I should call and ask if there has been anything reported? The neighbor down the road is taking one and running it in the barrel and poles. We also travel to a lot of the same races!

eta: I know in years pass all stock had to go through a wellness check before entering the fairgrounds. I am hoping, given the number of animals that pass through during the week they are still doing this.

I do not want to start rumors or anything, just thought it should be known. Hopefully the jacks were just road weary but thought it was interesting he said that one of them had just finished treatment. Wonder if the hauler even knew?

Wouldn't they farm where they came from have been quarantined?  Not sure on the length of that, but I do think there is a time frame.

If the jack was treated a month ago for it then the diagnosing vet would
Have had to report the treatment as it is a quarantinable disease. And since Oklahoma is not one of the states listed either a vet should be in big trouble or that isn't what they were treated for.

Why in the world would you bring in sick animals from another state?  I pray that this does not spread, that is the last thing we need...

I think that mule days has had EHV-1 problems associated with it a couple years ago.

In GA I can get a health paper for 6 months to travel on.

Its terrifying for these kids who are down there, then bring it back home possibly with them and then you have the kids that go on to Silver State and Nationals.
