| Debating buying an appaloosa reining horse and putting him on the pattern. He's nice with tons of buttons but my concern is 1. he's an appaloosa and 2. I don't recognize nearly any horses on his papers! which may just be because I don't know many appy or reining bloodlines... So my question is, would you buy a nice barrel horse (at least 1/2d locally) even if it was an appy? Would you pay the same as if it was a quarter horse? |

Location: Eastern OH but my heart is in WV | Myself, I would personally pay more for a good Appaloosa over other breeds. However, I love Appaloosas and I am not a paper person. I do realize though that I may be a "rare breed" myself in this thought process. LOL!
There is always a market for well rounded, good minded, performance horses regardless of what breed they are. |

I agree 1000%. Of course the die hard Appaloosa people will say they have no issues selling apps, I find it not to be the case. Like you mentioned you dont know app bloodlines as many others do not. I think it makes a little bit of difference if the horse is 100% in bloodlines or like mine who is all QH on the bottom (Reckless Dash/DFC) and MOSTLY TB on top, his sire is in the app hall of fame set track records - really an amazing app BUT when I had him listed for sale (off an on the last 2 years) I had interested people until they either saw pictures of him (he is a nice looking boy with a tail) or saw he was reg with ApHC. Do not buy if you are wanting to resale only. JMO.

Thats really sad. :( I know some people have preferances over blanketed apps or leopards but ANY that is NOT soild?? My app is a black roan who has grayed out and Im sad he only has a few black spots left. I am sorry you think that way. |

Wow really!!!! What type of horse do you own? You just never have come across a good one then. I have had some really nice Apps in my life time and there is some good working ones out there. If I was in the market for another horse I sure would not turn away from a nice app if I came across one. |

Why is that sad? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and can have their own preference. I don't think the above poster was in any way knocking Appaloosa's, just stating her personal opinion on the fact. And I would have to agree with her for the most part. I do not care for a colored app but would own one if it was bred well and solid colored. Just a personal preference, and not knocking the breed or any proven apps out there. 
To the OP, if you are planning to buy for resale, I personally wouldn't buy this horse. As you can see, there are a lot of people that are Appaloosa fans, but I would say that there are more that are not especially if they don't have the papers to back them up. Just my two cents though!

Location: Where I am happiest | Years ago, there was a Appy in the N.W. spanking everybody at the rodeo's and I do mean taking everyones money. People were lining up with offers trying to buy that horse!! Obviously, it doesnt matter if they are pink, purple, the color of mud or any combination there of, if they are a good horse, they are a good horse and people always want to buy good horses! |

Location: In The Snow, AZ | IMO, and I am NOT an appy "fan". I don't have a preference. But I do however get bored of seeing the same old sorrels, bays, greys, etc.... I wouldn't hesitate to buy a loud colored paint or appy. I like their uniqueness. For me, if I had the option of buying a pretty appy over a sorrel, if all credentials were the same, horses worked the same, etc... I'd pick the appy. |

But all of the appy fans I Personally know, that love them FOR their color, don't buy horses in the price range I would expect to see a 1D/2D horse in. Flame suit zipped up, but that is how it is in my area.
I know where a nice proven 1D mare is for sale right now. She is pretty and solid black, but has appy papers. Even though nearly every horse on the papers is a quarter horse. I can't beleive she hasn't sold yet, but I have no doubt the papers are making people shy away because she really is a nice mare. |

| I think the truth is, your market is smaller. And as sad as many may think it is, color matters. People will shy away from a loud appy a lot faster than if they are solid. Just the way it is. Obviously there are appy fans who love the bright patterns but the market is smaller.
In all honesty, I dont think you would get the same amount for a 1D/2D App that you would for a 1D/2D QH. Ive ridden a lot of BA apps and wouldnt turn one away but I know a lot of people who would. |

I have't thought about that in along time. I paid 5000 for an app barrelracing horse, had to buy from Wisconsin and have him shipped because there were literally NO appaloosa barrelhorses in Within a hundred miles or maybe the whole state  |
