Had a mayday today. My young mare was in the backside of her first turn and my darn off billet(leather) busted completely! Made it a few strides before there was no recovering. She has no withers to hold a saddle on if she had to. She handled it pretty well. I knew I was going to hit the dirt so I kicked my feet loose so they wouldnt get hung up and then hit the ground hard. Knocked me out a little, but mainly busted my tail bone up BAD. Having a super hard time sitting and of course I did a re run and then finished my other run later on. I could hardly handle sitting the saddle. Should I be feeling okay enough to hit my lesson at the end of the week?

I got ejected out the back of one and along with severe muscle spasm in my back (already have 2 bulged discs), I also had a hairline fracture of my sacrum. That happened in September of 2013 and I didn't ride again until December of 2013. It took me a while to heal even after I started riding. I also went to my ortho doctor and did physical therapy to help it. I work as an Athletic Trainer so I had the tools to treat it everyday as well (estim, ice, etc)

I'm on week 3 from a fall on my tailbone. I climbed back in the saddle yesterday, with the assistance of 800mg of ibuprofen. All we did was walk cautiously, and it was still uncomfortable but the weather was just tooooo gorgeous after all the rain we've been having. I am still a little sore this morning, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. I needed my horse/riding fix, I was getting grouchy! LOL Hopefully in another week or two I can get back to normal riding!!

I feel your pain - Literally. I probably would not attempt a lesson at the end of the week. Hugs and prayers for quick healing! It is NOT fun...

Thank you ladies, Feeling pretty crappy today. Super stiff neck and horrid tail bone pain! Only comfortable place to sit is the toilet LOL..... In actuality I am feeling pretty defeated. I rode more yesterday just because I knew I would be out of it for a while after that spill. I felt bad because I couldn't sit deep on her at all due to pain. I am hoping for a quick recovery, but with a 2 year old son that might be far fetched.

Get you a donut pillow.... and ignore all the funny looks! It does take pressure off the tailbone area when you are sitting.

Yes to getting a donut pillow.  And I would bet you can't ride at the end of the week.  It is going to take a while......at LEAST 3 weeks, probably longer.

Ouch, sorry this happened....
I made an attempt to ride bareback a couple of months ago when it was really cold... of course my gelding decided different and I ended up on my butt.... on the frozen ground. I think i bruised my tailbone something good because I remember vividly the first run a couple of days after I fell and I hit the back of the saddle when he left first.... I was not prepared for that!!! Holy moly that hurt!! It took a good 6 or 7 weeks before I didn't hurt during a run, and probably a week or 2 before I could sit normally on the couch.....
I hope it doesn't take that long for you!

Busted mine several times over my life, last time it was sliding too late into second. Was 3 shows into a 4 show buckle series. Iced, stood in a pool, ate Ibuprofen by the bottles and my mom made basically what amounted to an adult diaper out of heavy foam rubber so I could ride leading up to the last show. and actually had to wear it at the show.

Woo-hoo girl - you're tougher than me!! LOL Take some ibuprofen long enough before your lesson that it is working when you get there and be sure and have some handy for afterwards also. You don't want it to wear off... Cowgirl up!!! Today is 3 weeks since I fell and yesterday was the first day I attempted to ride (of course I've been blaming it on the rain) and it was uncomfortable, but not unbearable with lots of ibuprofen and we only walked. Good luck to you my friend!!!

If you really busted and broke that bone, remember it generally takes 4-8 weeks for bone to heal. Good timeframe. You are going to HURT until it does. My sister busted hers as a teenager and was out a few weeks.

Busted mine on the back of saddle when my mare spooked. Could barely sit and my tail bone area was green and blue. Took a good two weeks. Do yourself a favor and take a good 2-3 days off if it hurts to trot. I kept rebrusing mine taking it longer to heal.

I broke my tail bone a few years ago and I think it took about 6 weeks before I rode. I also sat on a pillow for a few weeks. Even after I started riding again it took a couple months before I could ride without it hurting at all. Take it easy for a little while and let it heal.

I have to work the next two days, if it is still bugging me by tomorrow after work I think I will take the doctor up on xrays. ugggg gooooo figure!

I'm so sorry you're in pain! That's the worst! :(  X-Rays might be a good idea. I had X-rays done the day after I broke mine just to make sure it wasn't going to cause any issues the way it was broken. Riding again after hurting it may have aggravated it even more. That sounds like a scary wreck so I'm glad it's only your tail bone busted up and you're not in even worse shape.

A quick up date. I went into the doctor right after it happened. She made it seem like I was only after pain pills, heck I dont even take ibuprofen. ugh...... anyways, she decided not to do xrays and said it was more muscle then bone. I went home, defeated and feeling like a whimp. :( Using BIO FREEZE by the gallon. The pain has yet to subside. My right hip and tailbone are still throbbing. I decided to take a trip to my Chiropractor, he came in and watched the video and checked me out. He refused to adjust me with out xrays because he believes I BROKE my tailbone and that I possibly have a fracture in my right hip. He sent in a request for me to get x rays tomorrow, so we will see what my riding future is this summer. I am so frickin bummed out!!!!!

That's awful!! That doctor woman should be ashamed for not doing X-rays and checking you out. I hope you get answers and its nothing too serious.

Bless your heart. I hope it turns out nothing is broken. And don't get me started on doctors thinking good people who are really in pain are pill seekers----just makes my blood boil.

Did you let the doctor know that your still in pain? I dont understand some doctors, seems like they wont listen to us when we try to tell them that we hurt or sick, they take it upon themselfs that they know how we feel and tell us how we should feel, when I was really sick at the first of the year nobody would listen to what I was trying to tell them how I was feeling, it took two times of being in the hospital and finally I had this one doctor that took the time to listen and ran the tests I was needing and he found out why I was so sick, he was my Angel.
So darn glad that your getting xrays done to see whats going on with your tailbone, thats a pretty darn good Chiro to be wanting you to get xrays befor he did anything.  I wonder why he didnt have xray machines in his office? The Chiro I used had them she wont touch you untill she saw xrays of the problem area. Hope that you get to feeling better soon
