What are your tricks to growing long manes? I have a palomino with a long mane, but I want crazy long! And I have a horse with a short mane that absolutely won't grow, I use mtg once a week and it doesn't make a difference!

I think some of it is genetics. I have one mare that has the longest thickest hair I have ever seen. It will easily go past her neck. I kind of trim it because she has so much hair. I call it her Fabio hair. She gets a bridle path because she has so much. In the flip side I got one that can grow a little lengthy but her mane is sparse.

I think it's  mostly genetics too. But if you want to stimulate growth it comes from the inside out (good nutrition).

Ditto. I had my horse's mane pulled short like a western pleasure horse (about 4"). I decided to let it grow out and it's almost tripled in length since January when I started my new feed program. Longer than it was before I pulled it.

Genetics is the biggest factor in getting a mane to grow. There are a lot of different products out there that claim to help encourage hair growth but non of them have been scientifically tested.

Things to do to help:

1. Only brush it when it is absolutely necessary. Brushing causes breakage and pulling of the hair.

2. Wash it occasionally.

3. DO NOT BRUSH IT WHEN IT IS WET. It strips the hair of oils and also allows it to pull out and break off more easily.

4. When brushing, use a detangler and a comb. Work out any witches knots or tangles a little at a time. It can take FOREVER but you will save so much more hair than trying to rip through with a brush.

5. After the mane is dry, clean and brushed out, smoother that puppy in conditioner and then braid it. After your braids are done, put some conditioner in your hand and run it down each braid from the mane line to the end. It will feel greasy and collect a lot of dirt, but it will help the hair maintain moisture and oils.

6. Do not turn your horse out where he can catch his braids and rip them out.

I know a lot of reining horse people who use the mane bags to help keep them clean but I have not tried them personally.

My mare probably has genetics working for her, her mane usually went past her neck, but after i put her on Renew Gold, and washed/conditioned/braided bi-monthly, its grown past her shoulder. Ive had her for 5 years now and its never been that long. Im not kidding, the longest piece goes down below her chest muscles. I trim off the "dead ends" in the spring, and thats about it. I hope her daughter gets these lovely genetics

Mtg and iv noticed since I started feeding a hoof sup. with biotin both horses are growing longer manes and tails. But genetics are a big part.
