Is there any specific care needed when you own a mare? Ya know kinda like the routine cleaning for a gelding's you know. . .but obviously something different?

mares are a lot easier to clean then the geldings in my opinion. I just do the teets too.

My mare gets gross down her back legs when she comes into a strong heat. So, she usually gets a bath once a month to scrub that stuff off to make sure the flies don't bother her. And it gets rid of that nasty heat stink. While she gets her bath, I usually get some warm water and ivory soap and scrub up between her teets. Black crusty dirty can build up between them (she's a maiden, so she has tiny, tight, perky boobs, LOL) and I get this out of there and make sure there are no ticks in and around the whole area. That's it. No elbow deep cleaning needed!

Well..... Once a month Aunt Flo will come to visit your mare and you may want to invest in some of these.

A caslick is something you need to look into as well, if she doesn't already have one.

Some mares need regumate too. Otherwise just the cleaning of their teats, and a quick hose off of the back end when you really work them hard. Idk about you, but I wouldn't want sweat up in there! haha My mare gets a tad spoiled though.

I keep baby wipes at the barn and in the trailer to keep my mare clean -- some mares will begin rubbing their rears against walls, fences, etc. if it's crusty / itchy about their lady parts.

I use sheath cleaner to clean between my mare's teats. The mare really does not need a caslick unless she is sucking air. I have had a lot of mares and only one that I run has been caslicked. She sucks air and I did not want her to get an infection. My broodmare is caslicked but that is a completely different situation.

Ain't nothing awkward about it. I often marvel at the fact that this is one place where you can say something like "I got a shipment of frozen semen today"and it's totally normal lol.

Good advice! I've always had my mares sewn up. Prevents air and bacteria from getting in there

^^^This is a super good idea! I forgot that my friend keeps baby wipes around for her mare.

I have NEVER in my life ever heard of a caslick. I just googled it, and OH MY! How necessary is this? What is the purpose? Can it be undone, like if you wanted to breed later, would it be necessary then?

I competed on a mare for 18 yrs and never had her caslicked. She was bred twice later on and foaled twice. I never cleaned her either except for when she was hosed off. I think if I keep this filly I raised this year, I would maybe look into a caslick. I'm on the fence about them, but I do see why people do them. We just keep our horses pretty natural and have had very few issues. None breeding related. My husband ranched on mares for years and years and never did anything special with them. Those are the mares we bred the first 5 yrs when we started to raise horses too.

I run 2 mares that have both had at least 2 foals and they are not casliscked. They do not suck air and my vet said it was unneccessary unless something chnaged. One of them is ALWAYS in season and she will get urine scald if left alone so in addition to washing her lady bits, buttocks, backs of her legs and using the excalibur in her teats, I will put vaseline on her butt to keep the urine from burning her. I think I am going to try regumate- now that the flies are out it is a pain to deal with if I want to keep her clean.

I have never caslicked my mares either. One of them has had 2 colts. My motto is: if it isn't broken, don't try to fix it.
