| I am trying to renew my insurance with a well known company. Since my horse was scoped and treated for ulcers last July, they are excluding COLIC from major medical AND mortality! He has never colicked or had any history of colic and they are telling me this is standard practice for ulcer treatment.
I am furious, this is a 50K horse and with a $1500 insurance policy he is not covered for colic? This is the main reason I keep insurance.
From now on if I suspect ulcers, I will treat accordingly and not file a medical claim. Just stinks that you pay for coverage that you had better not use :-(
Sorry for the rant! |

Who is your company? That is pretty insane considering a huge % of horses have ulcers. |

| That seems stupid since its preventative. Your trying to keep major things from happening. They shouldn't punish you. |

| I am switching over to Plains Horizon. They have a guaranteed renewal policy that sounds fair and reasonable.
It is a huge pet peeve of mine that you get punished for using services that you pay to have.
It would be one thing if they were excluding ulcers, I could live with that... But to exclude colic a year after the ulcers is ridiculous in my book.

Location: Texas | I don't even insure anymore because of stuff like that. I used my insurance when Lucy strained her suspensory then the next year, they wouldnt cover that leg. Not to mention, I still had to pay the deductible and they ended up not covering my PRP because of a an exclusion they had in my policy i overlooked. I understand it in a way but in other ways, it drives me nuts. |

This is my opinion too. I have been burned way too many times for being honest. I could have bought a pretty nice stallion for the money I spent on insurance the bast 12 yrs just to be denied when he finally needed put down. Screw em. |

I'm with you...I'll never insure a horse again. You're better off taking that premium and putting it in a special account. |

| I would also like to know the name of the company so I don't use them. The only thing I have on my side is that my best friend was an equine insurance agent and can assist me in getting one over on them if needed. LOL |

I didn't ask for a dime from them and I have had insurance for 8 years on him!!

Location: N. Texas | I actually am an insurance agent. I work with a Great company and the underwriters pay their claims (as long as they are justified and the insurer is not trying to abuse the major medical, which happens more often than not). We bought a rope horse last year for a LOT of money. The previous owner had treated her for ulcers and claimed it under the insurance. Guess what? I have an exclusion, if she dies, or colics DUE TO ULCERS it's not covered. If she colics because she is dehydrated, for example, it is covered. Read your policy carefully, and ask lots of questions. Last year I treated my own horse for EPM and the insurance paid two rounds of expensive medicine. I was surprised that I didn't have an exclusion for EPM at renewal. Major medical has gone up because of the amount of claims. You just need to read your policies carefully and then there will be no surprises. |

| Last year I had major medical completely denied at renewal on a horse that NEVER had a claim. She had seen the vet twice during the term. Once for an eye infection and once for an abscess. At renewal, she was denied completely and they never paid one dime on anything!! Soooo frustrating!
I switched companies with my new horse! |

Location: Okemah,OK | It's going to turn into more and more of a cat and mouse game.... Denying claims, rate increases, dropped coverage, vets charging more to make up the difference, having to hire employees to wade thru all the paperwork, etc. And it'll eventually get to where you can't afford to just pay cash for services.... Just like human health care! I don't know the answer but you can bet that's where is headed right now! |

| Not sure if anyone follows me on FB but the ones that do know what I have dealt with the past few months with Kat. At her lowest while at Oakridge 3 Insurance companies turned me down. Great Plains talked with me on a Sunday! Mothers Day at that!! And called Dr Hague on Monday and faxed my new insurance policy to Oakridge for me to sign while there. They have been absolutely wonderful!!! I would recommend them to anyone!! |

I personally, will not go without major medical. I have saved a ton of money by having it. They may exclude something the following year, but when it is time to renew again they have always picked it back up. Caitlin is the company that mine is through. It's $300.00 a year and worth every penny, so far.

I agree. Insurance did that with me after a mare we had coliced. They kept putting the rider to exclude colic after 2 years with no issues. |
