Location: Red Raiderland | I ride pretty much every day and I have two mares that I have to keep legged up. I have access to about 1000 acres with lots and lots of trails so it never really gets boring but on days that I only have an hour to ride I will pony one of the mares off of the other. Nothing unusual there but lately I have been sick of fighting to keep one mare from dropping her head to graze so I just decided one day to just unclip her lead rope and see if she follows us...
Sure enough she did! The mare I usually ride is an alpha mare and the other one acts like one but goes a bit bonkers when we are at a show or even at home and she can't see the other mare. I tried to switch and let the other mare follow, uh, that was not happening. She ran/trotted(a mile or so) right back to the gate that goes into our pasture.  
I feel safe letting them go as we know those trails like the back of our hooves and they like to just stay on them and not veer from the norm.
So, does anyone else do the "lazy girl's" way to exercise your extra horse(s)? |

| I guess you could add a "very" lazy to my lazy way of keeping them legged up.

Come over and let's give it a try! 
Actually, Troy was a bit weary to ride on his old gelding with us last week but Lulu did not bother his gelding at all. She stops and grazes and as soon as we get about 20-30 yards from her she comes trotting up, rarely ever passes us. It works out quite nicely with a "follower". |

RodeoMom, I think ponying one, two or three takes a lot of skill and I don't think laziness comes into play. I commend you for this. I have ponied two at a time and it can be very challenging. |

Ponying is one thing but to unclip the lead rope on the pony horse and hope it follows you is another. It just makes me giggle a bit when I actually look at her troting along with us when she has the free will to think, "Forget that! I'm gonna graze or just head back home." |

That is just awesome she trots with you the whole time, what a bond! I have 100 acres and I have one that doesn't like to be alone and he will trot along side us for a little bit but then he decides that's enough, time to graze.

Location: Golden Gulf Coast of Texas | The really lazy girl way is to pony them while riding a scooter. I used to do this when pasture was so wet I was afraid mud would suck their shoes off. It was battery powered so none of them spooked as I went up and down the road. |

The vast majority of my ridable horses would follow that suit.   What's so funny about this particular mare is that she acts very bossy in a stall and even turned out in the pasture with others but when I am the "alpha"(actually the mare I am riding)she just can't help herself but to follow.
It was a little experiment that I just tried because I knew if I shut the gate to the pasture that leads to the barn she could only go so far and would either stay back and graze, somewhat follow us or be all in and follow like a puppy dog. I like to get a ways ahead of her and try hiding behind trees, she can't stand it. I wonder if she will ever get tired of following because she is definitely on the lazy side when I actually ride her.  |

Oh yes the scooter, the Gator, the 4wheeler the truck, etc., all work well. We horse people can get real creative when the horses need to be legged up. |

Location: west of East Texas | I have had a couple that would do that but not the ones I want exercised now. The mini, however, runs circles around us the whole time. We let her go with us just to watch the show she puts on. |

| A long time ago I knew a crazy lady that ponied all her horses off a tiny mini bike. It was quite the site. |
