Gahhhhh!!!... Needs just a little more speed and I cannot kick or he will slow down. Any ideas? Sprinting exercises?

A dressage whip. Ask with legs and when he/she doesn't respond tap the hip. We do this with ones that get dulled up to legs. Within a day or two we have a very responsive horse again with very little work/tapping.

Kiss. Hiss. Shhhhh. Growl.

Try any kind of vocal sound to hustle them along. One can get pretty burnt out on the whip too. I've found that vocal cues seems to work the best for mine.

I've got a mare who shows a CRAP more ton of speed in a straight stretch running down the road then she will in a arena. I have found though, the more I have opened her up and just let her freely run when we are able to in a pasture or a straight stretch, the more she is figuring out she can stride out and run in the arena. REALLY ride with your body as well. My mare shuts down if you kick so you have to stay quite and let her figure it out on her own.

How long has this horse been running that you are talking about?

Breeze her while making whatever noise you are comfortable with, pretty soon she will associate that sound with RUN.

When I get in the arena, I forget HOW to kick.... So I make "shoosh"ing noises instead. Hubbs says, why aren't you kicking? I thought I was..... ;-)

My colt off the track wasn't used to kicking either lol so I made one phone call to the track trainer and asked what commands they use to teach the colts to run, besides the bat. lol ALl fixed.... once O said those words I got about 3 gears.

I shoulder clap and hiss at mine. He gets offended when I kick too much or too hard. He will have the "what the heck did I do?" Face if I whip him. I can get away with two or three lightish kicks coming off of a barrel but then he will start hesitating if I override him.

ANDY plus side to hissing, you look like you're smiling so your pictures come out kind of good instead of the strange kissy face or the clucking face.

Thanks for all the replies! Where I am at the ground is pretty hard and rocky so it is difficult to find a spot where one can open up. I did haul him and use a friends hay field over the weekend. Trying to get him to associate the Shhhhhh with opening up.
This guy has been running for a few years but it was not until this year that I discovered he will run faster without the kicking and whipping so now I am just trying to build on that.

Very curious as to what the three words were that a previous poster mentioned

I have an ex futurity cutter that will not run with spurs. He just keeps getting more and more collected, ears going every direction, ready to stop at any moment. I had a cutter point this out at the barrel race where I used them. He got pounded on a lot in cutting training, and assumed I was about to beat him or something.

If you use a bit, he will go from the 1D to the 3 or 4D. It took me a while to figure that one out. lol He made beautiful, technically correct, slow motion runs. So, I run in a little S with no spurs and don't touch him. (I'm just trying to stay on and not get left behind)  Luckily I'm a quiet type rider, or it would be a mess. Talk about sensitve and quirky. He's got all my mares beat in that department.

My gelding does exactly the same thing. I am still figuring him out, because even the whip shuts him off. What seems to be working is breezing him when I can, and just using my body to keep him moving and being very verbal. Some horses like to be left alone in a run. My gelding really does well with verbal cues.
