i tried a 7" gullet on my horse. He is wide in the shoulders. I put a white sheet under the saddle pad and rode him around in it to see what markings it left. I took it back to the saddle fitter and she said it fits great. I think it's a little to tight in his shoulders. But she said it's good. What does everyone think? What does your Martin look like on your horses shoulders? I see a lot of crown c"s sitting way down on the horses shoulders because of a to wide gullet.

Martins are designed to go BEHIND the shoulder, not on it. Unless your horse is really narrow you'll probably need a bigger gullet than a 7. The saddles that look to wide in the front probably need a shim under the front. Watch the Sherry Cervi video on YouTube shimming and saddle fit. Once your saddle is behind the shoulder, run your hand under the saddle without a pad to feel for even pressure.

That's what I was thinking. An 8". It's sitting behind his shoulders in the pic

These saddles have very very little flare. If your horse has big shoulders, the only way to make it fit is to buy too big and shim it.  Otherwise, it will be too tight on the shoulders.  The horses I like it on have flatter type shoulders.

Was the saddle fitter a trained Martin saddle fitter?

She owns a tack shop but I'm not sure if she's a certified Martin fitter. I don't know if there is someone around here

If you are trying a Martin saddle you need someone who is trained in Martin saddles, as the philosophy is different then most saddle fitters.

You can go onto their website scroll to the bottom of the page and call the number, they will help you and when I have dealt with Martin themselves, I didn't find them high pressured sales people.

Also they have a demo program, it is free I believe (or it used to be) take advantage of it, as Martin saddles aren't for everyone

Stick your hand under and feel for even pressure. My mare has very large shoulders and a 7.5" fits her well.
