Location: North Dakota | I can't get the idea of trying a hack on my horses. Cash has always been very mouthy with every bit. I've been using a low port myler snaffle that has a roller in the middle. That keeps him from chewing (and destroying) the bit. His teeth are well maintained and he's NOT a nervous horse by nature, and I can if he does get worked up. It comes down to either he does it for entertainment or he just doesn't like bits. He's light in the bridle, and since he's my shooting horse I ride him one handed a lot. I want a hack that's not too extreme in any way. Some bend, some whoah. I want something that allows me to get him to break at the pole and work "on the bit" when I need to.
The other one is very different. He needs lots of woah and very little bend. He's like riding a flighty rubber band. He was in a Sherry cervi twisted Dogbone short shank. He's very high strung and if he gets worked up or spooks, he'll try running through the bit and the more you try to get his head back, the more he fights by opening his mouth or "giraffe-ing". Now we are NOT heavy handed riders, and he's always up to date tooth-wise too, so it's something about the bit that's causing issues. We've tried him in a snaffle, but have absolutely NO control.
Also any info on adjusting hackamore is greatly appreciated. |

Location: Loma Linda, CA | Im not a seasoned hack person, but I just put a hack on my girl yesterday to try it out. Same reasons - she just seems to hate bits.
She will work to fight you when putting it on (though we have a system now :P)
and she is mouthy or raises her head.
Put a hack on her and ran her in a local jackpot and we got 1st in the 3D and she wasn't fighting me at all!
I used a jim warner and I really liked it! :)
She is also very light on the face/mouth, moves off legs well. Just a over all well broke horse and I'm a believer! I'll be using a hack on her from now on - previously I was using a sherry cervi short shank. |

Yeah, Cash never wants to open his mouth either. If I tickle his tongue for a second he'll open up though. Once he has it in he responds find to it and never tries to evade, he just messes with it all.the.time. |

The Little S is the least amount of lift/whoa/control you'll get from a hack. Like Curt from Carolina Bit told me, it's one step up from a halter. It's great for the super broke, really bendy, really ratey horses that don't need a lot of help on the pattern. I run my gelding in a Little S. He doesn't need much help at all. So it works well for him. I work him in a Simplicity or a short shank 3 piece lifter at home to keep him soft and supple
The JW has more control more lift more whoa. More refinement overall.

Personally, I would find a used little s and used JW and try them on both, I think the little s would be good for the first horse mentioned and the JW for the second. I also find its WAY easier to stay out out of a horses way with a hack than with a bit if that is an issue you've been having. Most people are surprised the first time they try a hackamore. |

| Clampitt, Ed Wrights JD, and Stivers are my go to hacks and are the best on the market. I use the JD hack on my mare that hates bits but works wonderful off nose pressure. I only use it for warm up though because she almost has a little too much control and collection so I run her in the Stivers which I love as well.
I run my other mare who I would have never thought would like a hackamore in the shorter shank Ronny clampitt and I won't put anything else on her. I actually have quiet a few horses who work wonders in the clampitt.
If you're up for trying another bit, the Derby bit with roller by Professionals Choice is a really good one with lots of collection but too much for my one mare, and I don't know why but almost every horse I've put the Hodges Futurity Bit (Reinsman) on has been amazing. |

Location: North Dakota | The first horse is just my mounted shooting horse, but the second one is a barrel horse. He is nearly automatic on barrels and will over bend his neck of you get in his way. Really the only concern is stopping him at the end! Just doing arena work is where the lack of control comes in. |

It seems to have whoa, but mine will tuck his head nicely as well and flex. It's more of a side pull I think and my horse enjoys it.
A Beetle and a Little S are going to have less whoa.
i wasnt a fan of the Bozo if that helps at all. |

If I were you I'd get a pre-fab hack or borrow one to see if it could be an option and you can get a good feel before you go have one custom made. |

| In my experience beetle has more control than little s, and stiffens them up a little more. Stivers has good whoa and makes them a little stiffer too.. I liked the look of the Jim Warner but my horse wouldnt work in it. I also really like the L&W metal one. My horse doesnt act like it bothers her any more than a rope one despite it looking so much stronger. You can also experiment with different curb straps and looser or tighter to find what he likes |

Horse.com has little s hacks for like $13. They may have some other styles too. There was a girl selling JW look alikes on a tack swap page on Facebook for $25. You can find good deals on the new and used ones for sure. They're out there. Some people will still think highly of their used junk though. Just have to weed through them. Lol |
