Location: MN | May be a silly question...but who all uses a Martin Crown C with a CSI? I still use the shims on my horse but was wondering with this pad, would I have to or would I still be able to use them? Are they really that great of a pad for the money?
Just looking for opinions before I do spend that kind of money!

| I use crown c saddles with csi pads.
I have a 10 gullet I use without shims on one horse, it fits her to a t, 11 flat on a different horse without shims.
If I use these saddles on different horses, I do shim with the csi pads as the saddles are a little big. |

I had the same thing happen and it was from an improper saddle fit, the saddle was bridging the back, since the plate is flexible it makes contact infrequently when the horse moves a certain way creating the ruffling.
The flex plate is stiff and dissipates the weight throughout the plate, the down side of the plate is it likes to go back to its neutral position.
The Ed wright has that build up piece and this probably filled in the gap. Ed wright pads are great quality felted in the same plant as 5 star, conforms to the horse, and is half the money as a 5 star |

I just looked...the cheapest Ed Wright Pad is $170.00 and that sure isn't half the price of a 5 Star.

I don't know where 5 star gets their wool from, someone once told me they buy their wool from china, not sure if this is true or not.
When I asked Ed where he got his wool from his pads was from a sheep farmer near where he lives.
When I ordered my wells 5 star straight from the company (this is like 15 yrs ago) it was 320 nothing fancy so I guess they have came down in price, and last time I looked at wright pads they were 150, so I guess they have went up in price.
Personally I don't like the 5 stars since wells sold out, I tried one, and my original was far superior, sold the 5 star as fast as I could.
Each company has pros and cons, and every person will have their preference, some horses will also have their preference.
The best thing to do is find a saddle that fits |

I for one love my CSI... I also know lots of people who love theirs aswell. With shims you put them between the top piece and the bottom piece of the CSI where the shoulder plate is. |

Location: TN | I have a CSI and I love it! My Martins fit well with it and it leaves a nice, even sweat pattern. I have been using the Classic Equine foam rubber shims between the pad and the saddle like usual with no problems. The only thing I would change is the wool liner is not nearly as soft as a 5 star, but the pressure dispersion of the plate makes it worth it. |

It's a no brainer the best thing is to find a saddle that fits but as we all know, sometimes that is almost an impossibility.
Trust me...Ed's comment about getting his wool from a neighbor was his dry sense of humor. LOL
