 Don't Wanna Make This Awkward
Posts: 3106
Location: Texas | My horse has never taken a slow step in his life towards the alley much less not wanting to go. 3 weeks ago I ran him at race that had barrels and poles. He went in perfect for barrels, then wouldn't go in for poles and he had about a 2 hour break and he was completely cool and happy the whole time waiting, it wasn't too hot. He went in perfect the weekend both days at marshall, then this past weekend at elite he went in good on friday and he wouldn't go in saturday someone had to walk me in and then sunday we went and walked in and out before we warmed up and he was perfect, then after we warmed up he wouldn't go in and it ended being a huge disaster and we almost didn't make our run.
So here's my thoughts:
1. Ulcers.. He hasn't been treated in 2 years but he never really had them either it was just for prevention. The only thing is he doesn't show any other signs of ulcers.
2. When my cicnch gets really tight with my new saddle the metal D ring pushes past the cinch and goes into his side. We are switching saddles to try and eliminate this one.
3. Hocks. But he is working a perfect pattern and feels better than ever and he also get previcox every day and then bute when he runs.
4. Behavior, he just isn't the type of horse to act up, i've never had any issues with him for 4 years now.
The other thing is lately (last 3 months) he doesn't want to go in the trailer. This is making me think it's pain if he doesn't even want to go to the race.
Any opinions? I'm open to anything, I've postponed all barrel races until I think this is solved. |

| First thing I would check is ulcers especially if you are giving bute. I always put mine on a maintenance dose of ulcer gard if giving bute because it is hard on their stomach. I have one that the only sign of ulcers was him getting extremely nervous at the gate.
Other thing.....I could be wrong so check with your vet but I believe I remember mine telling me not to give bute if they have been on previcox for more than 5 days.

| Pain.
Have the vet check the bursa sacks surrounding the joints, one vet up here says he is seeing more bursa issues then joint issues as a result of trailering. Him refusing the trailering makes me think this.
Also my understanding was never to give previcoxx and bute together, this horse could definitely have gastro issues just because of these two drugs.
Take him off of all drugs for atleast a week then take him to the vet for an exam. |

Location: Florida.. | Sounds like Hocks ...If my horses hocks are really sore they will not step up into trailer..if their stifles are sore the ramp is A issue..Just because hes on the other he might need injected.... it sounds like that and then when hes ran he gets worse and therefore next day is telling you NO way..

Location: Central Texas | I am going to agree with not giving Bute and Previcox together. I have always been told to never give two types of NSAIDS at the same time. I mistakenly did this a long time ago and my very solid/consistant mare completely quit running for me and started refusing the alley. She also quit eating/drinking at races, started exhibiting gas colicky symptons after a run. Just appeared to be having a extremely bad digestinve upset. Just a thought. |

Location: Texas | one of mine has started refusing and I'm on my 4th trip to the vet tomorrow. so far we have done hocks, then lameness locator- blocked to stifles then injected those, third trip was a float, fourth trip we will find out tomorrow...
I'm a firm believer that when a horse starts refusing there is a legitimate reason behind it. I went back to my old flex tree saddle with her, pulled the back shoes i started putting on this year, I know her teeth are good... so now it's a matter of, what else am I missing.. obviously something is bothering her enough to where she is saying no. |

| I would be making a vet appointment, it could be so many different things. |

Location: MD | Did he bleed?
Eta: saying this because he went in fine for barrels then suddenly stopped on poles. I wouldn't rule out a pain issue either

Location: Texas | Yeah I'm sure it's pain related too.. I just had him vetted 2 months ago and he was perfect, but a lot can change in 2 months.. I will take him off the bute.. I had no idea that was a bad combo so thank you guys for that.. I know he's been in pain and ran before and it never affected him going in, but maybe he's just trying to tell me earlier this time around. I do have a lameness exam scheduled and he'll have a break until then.
I have questioned bleeding before, but he never coughs or seems disturbed or upset after a run.. Do I have to run him and then scope him to find out if he bled? Or how else do they figure it out? I'm not comfortable with needles at all so this scares me because I don't want to have to give lasix, but these are completely different signs then when his hocks are sore. |
