Took mare to vet again to get to the bottom of her problem. This is 3rd trip to 3 different lameness vets. I told him to check ovaries. Well found a cyst the size of an orange on left side. Gave her a shot to dissolve. What can I give her to prevent this from happening again?

we had a mare once that had one the size of a grapefruit, she was given a shot to dissolve it and it worked, it did take time though to dissolve..she would not turn the first barrel when she came in heat..once it dissolved she went back to turning the first barrel...we just had her palpated to check her every so often to check for reoccurence, or paid attention for the same the symtoms as before. but this was years ago and and there may or may not be a prevention now

Anyone know how long it will take to dissolve after shot. Vet said 24 hrs. A couple friends said it would take a while

I would ultrasound again to make sure that the cyst did go away. With my mare, only one shot was necessary, and then I started her in Regumate. I tried an injectible, but regumate was the only thing that kept the cyst from coming back. She did this two seasons in a row, it was only an issue while she was cycling. She would begin to bite when being cinched. Got rid of the cyst and put her on regumate and the problem was resolved. My mare's cyst was estimated to be softball size, it was pretty large.

I have had 2 mares 20 years apart that would develop multiple follicles or "cysts" up to the size of a grapefruit. After trying EVEYTHING out the for both mares (who continued to get multiple, retained cysts with each heat), I ended up spaying both mares.

As far as the shot to "dissolve" the cyst, it is a shot to encourage them to ovulate, not dissolve the cyst. My vet would always come back 3 days later to see if cyst had released. If not, he would manually "massage " the "cyst" to get it to release.

Hope you find something that works
