If a horse is on 1 gram of bute for a week should you worry about ulcers? He has had them before but not for a long time. I'm not clear on how long it takes to develop ulcers? Thanks in advance

Studies have shown some horses 3 days. When we had stifle surgery done on a horse the surgeon said 5 days on bute then 1 or 2 days off then 5 days again. If your on long term, have you looked into previcox? Why is your horse on bute?

Mine pretty much gets an upset stomach if he is on bute for any amount on time. I treat him for ulcers as a preventative if I must give bute.

Vet recommended he get bute a few days before going to a weekend show where he will be running more than once, he recommended that a long time ago because he doesn't have good feet, really thin soles. He is on Equi sure as a preventative, hasn't had an issue with ulcers in a couple of years but I know new ones can form. He wouldn't be on bute long term 5 days max

There is always a small percentage of horses that can get upset stomachs and maybe ulcers from an anti-inflammatory as bute using 1 gram.  A very large amount of horses can be on 1 gram every day for a long.  Usually 1-2 grams of bute will not cause uclers.  Research studies have shown this to be fact not opinion.  I don't have the documents handy.  A highly respected vet, Thomas tobin previously from the University of Kentucky provided me with their studies.  However, for research purposes horses were given 4, 5, 6, and 8 grams of bute a day and it didn't take long to burn up a stomach.  Not recommended for the horse owner.  I would label that as abuse.

IMHO one of the most important thing is to be sure that horses on bute have 24/7 continuous access to good quality roughage to assist in the absorption of stomach acid.
