| you can tell you have been doing slow work. The second barrel she still seems a little lost and I think your giving her a little too big of a pocket, she's having to take an extra stride to get around it. Have you ever considered putting a tie down on her? The way she sticks her nose out, it might help give her something to brace against therefore helping her get her butt down and not hop. All in all, its looking a lot better. Keep reminding yourself not to rush her. The more times she can get on the pattern and cruise at her speed with the least amount of help, the more confidence she'll get and the faster her progress will be. Let her cruise it at her speed and then hustle her home. |

Location: NE Texas | I think you both look really good! I agree with FlyingJT on closing down the pocket on your second. My advice would be too concentrate on placing your horse at the right place rather than going fast right now. The biggest mistake I seen green jockeys making is asking for speed and over-riding their horse with wild hands, feet, and seat and not worrying about the pattern or placement of their horse through the pattern. Remember that smooth is fast and if the pattern is correct, then the speed will come.
Nice job and keep up the good work!!! |

The second barrel has been a challenge lately but I started making her led yeild left coming off of it so she can't blow her hip out and that seems to helps a little, I'm a little afraid to give her less room in the pocket thinking she might try to blow it on the backside. She doesn't do that when we lope through at home but away is a different story.
On a different horse, I would try a tie down, but I've rode her in one before to go pasture roping and she is one of those horses that could be dangerous with a tie down on. Her front end didn't spend very much time on the ground.... Without the tie down however its all good. I have been using a running martingale doing slow work however and she agrees with that, maybe I should try running in one? Or just haulingnto a friends place and cruising her through with the martengale? |

I just suggested it, not because she's getting her head up and in the way but because the way she roots with her nose coming around the barrel. Some horses will use a tie down to brace on. I personally won't run in a martingale but I'll warm up and practice in one. I think you need to trust her on the second and move her in, it's costing you time and making her have to work harder to get around it. |

Location: Sperry, OK | I also think you are giving way too much pocket on the 2nd. She is a pretty compact horse and shouldn't need much room at all. In all actuallity, you will cause more of a blow out on the back side by having too much room on the front side, as it causes them to take an extra step or to step off to get around without hitting it. As long as she is finishing her turn where you have her now, she should finish it with less pocket coming in too. And if not, then do the same drills to get her to finish it that you are doing now, just do them with less pocket and she should come together nicely. I also think you are coming into your first barrel too straight. Give her a little more angle (not necessarily a rainbow, but I would come into it with more of a swoop than the straight line you have. And I don't mean 10 or 15 feet, just 3 to 5 feet) there and she should not have to get by it so far on the front/back corner to get around it. You are brushing the first leaving it because your approach is too straight, causing her to go too deep on the front, she runs out of room leaving it and you are rubbing it. If that continues, you will eventually starting taking it down with you when you leave it. But your third barrel was really nice, and overall a really nice smooth run.. keep working.

Our most recent run! I've been giving her less pocket on the second barrel practicing and doing more pasture riding than anything else.
What do you think? |

That first barrel is a huge improvement from where you started
The second barrel I think that was more you getting in her way, but I did notice she didn't take as many strides to get around it.
The third we can say is the second barrels fault, had her coming in a little wide.
All the above is nit picky stuff, I think over all you and her are doing great! If every time you go to a barrel race something is improved then your doing it right. By this winter you should have one heck of a horse... |

Location: North Dakota | First barrel looked pretty good.
Seemed that your pocket on the 2nd was MUCH better than it has been in the past. Watch your body position as you are leaning inward a little bit. Make sure to stay sitting upright. And then STAY sitting throughout the turn. On the backside, you were standing in your stirrups and that may have thrown Squiggy off. Staying sitting with also help you finish the turn all the way.
Too big of a pocket for the 3rd. I agree that was influenced by how you left the 2nd barrel.
But overall I do see improvement so you are making progress. |

| I think you look pretty darn good. The only thing I would change is the second barrel. Some slow work where you ride to the second barrel and sit where you want the horse to rate. Not enough rate is what I am seeing. If you get that rate, then you should be able to stay off the horse's head and let the horse work. You should be able to just lift up at the end of the turn on the second barrel to help finish it and not bow out. If you will look where you want to go the horse will go there so when you are FINISHING the turn on the second look to the third barrel. Don't wait until you have already turned. I think this (looking where you are going) will help you as much as anything. |

Just continually make a solid, smooth run every time and don't even worry about speed. The more she does the exact same perfect pattern, The more confident she will gain and then you can start stepping up her speed. |

Now that we got a pretty decent run under our belts, I feel like I for one know what it should feel like, and can being to ride her better and help out a bit more without doing too much.
She really tries her heart out for me, this run placed us 3rd in the 2D and #6 over all for the day. If we could run at this speed consistently for a while I will be absolutely over the moon. Breaking into the 1D would be nice, but for her ffirst year running I don't need her to be THAT good. |

Location: Saskatchewan | Here's tonight's run, 18.5 so slower than the previous but barely. The ground was also a little different, and she had a few days off cause I wasn't home all factors that could impact us negatively. And I lost a stirrup ?? its been a while since I last did that.

Good job!
Have you had an accident at the 2nd barrel or hit it afew times or have any reason to be afraid of that suconciously? Most people struggle with the 1st barrel, but you actually ride really well into the 1st and keep your hands really low and gentle, then when you get to the 2nd your hands almost seems to panic and the go all over the place.
I would really work on rating at the second barrel and have her over-finishing it on the back side. That way you can just drop your outside hand at the barrel and let her work like you do on the 1st. You could definitley be running consistent 17.8-17.5's on that pattern if you smoothed up the 2nd and 3rd. You have come a long way and this should be a fairly simplay problem for you to fix!
If that doesn't work I would look into switching to the left barrel first. |

Location: Saskatchewan | We had a few issues with blowing it completely, it it being entirely my fault, we still clocked low 19s blowing it but it wasn't good at all. I suppose that's made me tense and get all up in her business when I should be staying out of it.
Actually, the problem barrel was 1st until she spooked at a rodeo and hulk smashed it, jumped over it and we almost had to put on a bronc riding school, but since that incident she's been nailing it!
I'll really work on finishing that second barrel up nice this week! |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | Looks really good, I like the way you shape her into her turns that seems to be the style she wants to run with, I agree with what others said, to much pocket, she wants to wrap them so just run straight to your spot, shape and turn. I always set cones where I wanted to be and walked them a million times, just 3-4 feet from the barrel all the way around with a turny/round horse.
I like her style a lot, you've done good, keep doing what you're doing |
