Location: Never in one place long | Amazingly, after me fostering her and networking her, this dog has found a home and was adoopted today!! She will live on a farm with 20 acres with another very sweet dog and a loving family, they will continue to try and figure out what is wrong with her and love and care for her! I will stay in contact with the family on their journey as well and get the donated dog food and forco to them to try! Thank you everyone!!
We had a 6 yr beagle mix come into our shelter a month and a half ago... she came in thin, her owners said they were surrendering her because she needed a fenced yard and they didn't have one... supposedly 6yrs old... Long story short... she has lost an additional 15lbs since she came to the shelter, she is VERY stressed and has bad diarrhea most of the time. We can't get her to gain any weight, she pushes her nose into the kennel so bad it's bleeding and her tail is bloody from wagging it. The director said they tried feeding her all the food she wants and probiotics as well. She has not improved... they don't know what is going on and said she will be euthanized Friday if she is not adopted or in foster... I'm not sure what to do.. if I should try to foster her to see if she got better or if there is any hope for her??? Could this all be due to stress? The fact that she was already skinny when she came in, has me wondering..... Any advice or success stories PLEASE!!! not sure what to do...

Location: Willows, CA | If this is not a parasite problem, it is likely a food allergy. If someone gives her a home, I will donate two bags of our Non-GMO dog food shipped directly to them. That would rule out the food allergy issue.

Take a chance. I rescued a dog with confirmed parvo once. And she had to stay in quarantine at the vet I took her to. And she lived a long and happy life but it was rough that first week. |

Oh definitely has been tested and heartworm tested etc. They were checking to see if they'd done blood work... the shelter is on a limited budget so they dont' like to "waste" a lot of resources on just one dog with little hope in their eyes... :( |

That is so awesome of you!! They wanted to see if I took her to foster for a week if she'd gain any weight due to lower stress...I wonder if they'd tried better dog food or allergies, she has SUCH a dull coat too... I'd love to try the non-gmo food to see!! They said she will chase and attack cats so I'm going to have to be careful.. I have 6 cats but they all stay in the shed. |

| From the picture it looks like her abdominal is extended. Have they taken xrays? Sounds like cancer could be a reason too.... Our lab years ago did the same thing. |

So the shelter gave her the vaccinations or the owners say they vaccinated when the dumped her at the shelter? I missed that in your original post. Have you decided what to do? |

She had records of her vaccines, plus we vaccinated her to update her. it's requirment when they come in to be updated on vaccines. I am planning to take her to my house for right now to save her and foster her. Then I will either pay out of my own pocket to get her to the vet for xrays, ultra sound and blood work if needed. Hoping the shelter will help pay for at least a portion of the cost but I don't know.. if they don't, I still feel that it needs to be done to rule those things out. |

Location: Usually on my horse | Put her on plain rice and chicken diet until her stomach settles down. Perhaps add some plain yogurt to that as well for probiotic purposes. Get some antibiotics in case she has some kind of intestinal infection going on. Have her tested for Addison's disease. This is something a lot of vets don't think about but I have one with Addisons and he was showing the same symptoms. I also just rescued another one who came to me with bad diarreha and blood in his stool. Turned out to be an intestinal infection. Antibiotics cleared it up. Last of all I would have an ultrasound done. I just recently lost my JRT to cancer of the liver and her stomach looked like that as well in the late stages. Good Luck. Hope you find what is wrong with her. Thanks for caring enough to help her. |

| I'm glad you are giving her a chance.
I've found most vets are really great about giving you a break if you are trying to help one. They've usually given us discounts, and I think we even had one not charge us at all for the visit on a cat that couldn't be saved & they had to euthanize.
I hope it's just stress, and she blooms under your care. |

Edited: I don't want this be taken as depressing, although it is. We fostered a dog from our local shelter for this very reason, family he had known all his life, dumped him. He was very stressed and you could tell something was wrong with him medically. He came and stayed with us and did pass away in a few weeks, still not sure why but at least he passed with my family around him and not alone in a shelter kennel.
