Location: South | After a lot of thinking, I've decided I need to move my 8 year old gelding. I'm I'm graduate school and just don't have the time or finances to justify keeping 2 horses. The gelding I'd like to find a home has an old injury in his pelvis (2 1/2 years since unknown injury) and is not sound to do more than a walk on the trails. He was my dream barrel prospect out of FG and I purchased him as a colt and raised and broke him myself. I used to board him over the winter and that is supposedly where he got hurt while I was not there, and 5k later no Vet etc has ever found a solid answer.I am so attached to him, but I don't have a facility where he can comfortably live out his life. I don't have any grass here, just dry lots, and with winter approaching I just can't feed another mouth that I'm not actively competing on.So, how would I go about advertising him as a companion horse? I tried getting him into a therapeutic riding program since he is so quiet, but no one will take one that has any prior injuries.I'm afraid to let him go for free, as I don't want a meat buyer to get their hands on him and I'm also nervous someone is going to see his color and bloodlines and try and make something out of him.I know there are a lot of Facebook groups for my area for horses for sale I've thought about listing him on and asking maybe 500 for a companion or small kids horse just to sit or walk on.Any other ideas? |

Good luck |

| Just going to bump for support. It's hard because even after you sell you have no control of what happens to them. I only ride mares because even if there pasture sound only I can market as brood mare sound. I know there is no good answer for any of it but keep your head up. |

oh yeah, after this happened I can definitely see why so many prefer mares simply for that reason. A good friend of mine only owns mares as well and she is always able to breed them, or market them at the very least.Thank you! |

| Don't know where you live but there is a therapeutic riding facility in Diana TX that takes horses with injuries.
The lady that owns it was a jockey and this is the way that she gives back to the community. Some of the horse's are just used for grooming because some patients are unable to ride. Diana is located near Longview TX. The facility is Windridge. |

Location: Missouri | If he were mine, I would either place him privately with a friend or family member that I knew would take care of him as he ages and inevitably gets worse or I would consider laying him to rest. As bad as that sounds for a young horse that may be a better option than him being passed around or someone trying to compete on him.
I have one in my pasture that is now 9 (injured at 3) and I am fortunate to have a place to keep her and use her for a broodmare (should I decide to), but if couldn't I would likely have her laid to rest.
Hugs to you as I know it is a difficult decision |

Location: NE Texas | wwoodsbhorses, i'd like to speak with you on this particular horse if you get a moment. I have a unique situation and may be interested him from a clinical perspective. He would receive the best care available and would never be put in a position to be in pain or exceed what he's capable of doing. I sent you a pm and hope to hear back from you! |

I'd trust Herbie because you could keep track of him. Other than that, my advice is if you can't afford to keep him, put him down. Bad things happen to horses in other people's care. |

This is what I was thinking too. I've seen many horses who were sold not sound to ride that end up drugged and ran anyways. You just can't trust people's word anymore. |

Location: NE Texas | Thank you KMC and Chandlers Mom for your confidence. It could be a great opportunity for this horse to have every opportunity to be as comfortable and as close to sound as possible. I can guarantee he would never go through a sale barn or to a meat buyer and in the process of treating him it would potentially give us the research needed to help others along the way!

Give the horse to Herbie. She's legit. |
