All, I work for St. Jude and have convinced the leadership there to start a new nationwide barrel racing program to raise funds and awareness for the hospital. We decided this was better than going through other producers and having events "for the benefit of" St. Jude. The event is called the St. Jude Barrel Jam.

I have a few questions -- we started a stallion services auction and have about 20 great stallions. How do I get the word out? You don't have to be at the event to bid. How can I find broodmare owners that would want to bid?

Also, any suggestions on getting new sponsors signed up? We have had a really hard time being a new program. Right now we have EquiResp but that's about it. Shea Michelle Buckles is helping us out and she is AWESOME. But we need cash sponsors.

Any suggestions on growing a new program to the level of a nationally known super show is welcome!

thank you. We are working on BBR sanctioning. Ross Wright is helping on that. We have to decide if it's worth it to pay for WPRA sanctioning -- that's $325.

Rather than making it a donation of sponsorship money, sell advertising space.

Is this post real?  No offense but St. Jude's is a mega charity and barrel racing doesn't seem like it would even be on their radar.

I've been watching the stallions you have posted on Facebook and I'll be bidding on sone for sure! As far as sponsorship, showing up in person does a lot better than phone calls. I agree sell advertising.

Yes, it is real. Here is the link to the event. https://www.facebook.com/events/102776030063222/
I have worked there for 5 years and have wanted to build up our equestrian program ever since I joined. There is a program called Saddle Up which is about trail riding, but I thought we could do so much more. I am passionate about horses and barrel racing and passionate about St Jude. Will be a dream come true if those passions can come together.

Regarding asking for sponsorships in person, that is a great point. Thank you.

I think I have liked every single stallion posted! If you can have good added $ races and a consistent annual stallion auction you will get people to spend money for this cause. I like that other items have also been added to the auction, I'm excited to attend!!

I agree.  It's easy for me to turn someone down over the phone (or not even answer the phone if you know what kind of numbers to look for), but if you show up and ask in person it's much harder to say no.  Have a nice flyer or pamphlet made up and it seems more sincere to leave that behind if the person holding the purse strings isn't there.  Good luck!  I see it is Lazy E.  I will mark my calendar and hope I have a horse running by then!

Well one way to get more exposure is for all of us who do have face book to share it. No one can deny St Jude's isn't a worthy cause. I hope you have a great turn out.

I would greatly appreciate the shares! Especially the fundraising links. People that raise $1K or more receive a great buckle from Shea Michelle. And I will hit the streets looking for more sponsors.

I can't offer you any other suggestions in regards to sponsorship but would like to commend you for taking on such a huge endeavor for a worthy cause! I wish you the best of luck and shared your link on my fb page.

I can see it on their radar as they have many big barrel races in their area plus I know they have some Annual Trail Rides for St. Jude.

Done!  Not a better reason to go to a benefit run!  Wanted to mention that I've done the local St Jude trail ride - it was fun and for a great cause (not to mention, the barrel horse got to catch a break and see the wildnerness....FUN)

Thank you! So far so good. We now have 50 bidders in the stallion auction. No race entries yet but the forms just became available a week ago. Thanks all for the social media sharing and encouragement !

I've had this event on my calendar for several months. As a long time St. Jude partner in Hope I'm super excited to go to an event to raise more money. I think you are doing a great job for your first year - excellent venue, fantastic auction items. Everyone I know in the KS and OK areas are planning to go. All your FB promoting keeps this high in my notifications list and on my radar screen.

Are you taking donations of crayons at the Memphis race next year also?

We will probably do something different than crayons. We collected 175,000 crayons!!! And many, many coloring books. That's enough to last us for a while and we even shipped crayons to Honduras!

I could NOT BELIEVE how many crayons people brought! It was a real testament to the generosity of the barrel racing community.

One thing you could do is to make sure you follow up with a Thank You. I teach school and require that my students preform community service. Each year they want to do something for St. Jude we have donated quite a bit to them and each time when we deliver we get the same response which is take it to the warehouse with a rude tone. Never a thank you or kind word. I know yall get a lot of donations but when young people donate that is a big deal in today's society.
So start with enthusiasm and it will rub off on others and grow. IMO
