Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | My uncle had a filly that he raised out of his penning mare and a Doc Tari stud that won a good bit in the cutting arena. She was originally meant to be his but he decided to give up penning and focus more on working his own cows. He had a couple good all around ranch type horses so he didn't have a need for her. So when she was 5 months old he gave her to me for Christmas. He helped me teach her all the ground work so she bonded with me instead of him then broke her for me but taught me how to teach her. So she bonded with me from day 1. I was 14 at the time and This Christmas will be 10yrs ago. I poured my heart into her. I had her patterned as a 3yr old and I've been running her since. She never got better than a 3D horse. Every now and then she might make 2D. She works cows can run poles can be roped off of carries a flag crosses anything on a trail. She's just a great all around horse. It was all great back then but now this thing called Life has caught up with me. I have 3 others but one is a solid 1D local show and the others are 2D. I have a full time job a boyfriend and I want to go back to school. I am to the point that I am overwhelmed and it's hard for me to be motivated to even ride. So I want to sell 1 maybe 2. She is my least favorite to run but how to you sell something that you poured your heart and soul into and has a sentimental value higher than any amount of money? Should I try to put all emotions aside and do what I have to do? Plus I have a problem selling something that was given to me even if that was 10yrs ago and my has told me to sell her if I wanted to. Realistically I need to sell her but emotionally I don't know if it's the right thing. |

Location: Arkansas | My heart would never let me sell!! After all the time and effort and love you've put into her, I think you would regret it. Like you said, her sentimental value is higher than any amount of money to you. . . I know that doesn't help your situation any tho. Are you thinking of selling for the money or just because you have too many? |

Both. I need the money but I'm not broke. I do have too many. |

Location: MD | I would sell her, it's not fair to her to not be someones #1. Talk to people that you think would be a good fit for her. She sounds like she would be a super horse for someone that wanted to go out and have fun. |

Location: KS | I wouldn't sell her. I have one (well she is actually my moms), had her since she was 6 months old. Spent what seems like a lifetime with her. Took her to college with me and she lives with me now back at home. She was my first barrel horse, and we ran 3D most of the time, but shes that horse that I have a bond with, will always compare others horses to that horse. She'll be with me til the end...... |

Location: Four Corners Colorado | I have a mare like that. She is a 13.2 palomino Quarab. I've had her since she was born. She was the first horse I rasied and trained. I have millions of miles on her and she is my go to pony, I ran barrels on her but she never was fast enough to win, but she tried her heart our and we had fun. She has been there with me for better and worse, from break ups and heart breaks to my best moments. She is my best friend and always will be. Over the years, I've leased her out a couple of times. Sold her once and bought her back. She is 18 this year and she will never leave my place again. I don't ride her much but every so often I catch her up with a hay twine and go for a spin around the pasture. She helps me find my way when I'm feeling lost, she is my everything pony. |

That gave me goose bumps it was so heart touching. My story is similar. My first gelding wasn't much of a barrel horse, but he tried so darn hard. He taught me more about life than anyone could ever teach. He had the funniest personality. We use to just let him out in our front yard. He never left our property. If you called his name, he would come running right up to.you. He has also saved.my butt too many times to count. I wouldn't have traded that horse for the world. Although I didn't have him when he was weanling, we did own him for about 7 years until he got struck by lightening... Do what your heart tells you. Yeah, she might not be your go to barrel horse, but if she is your go to best friend, don't let her go. Cause once she is gone, you might never get her back.

I thought about a lease.... If anyone has a good story about a lease I would love to hear it. I've done it twice and it ended bad both times. One attempted to take my horse 9hrs away out of state without asking. I found out through a mutual friend. I wouldn't have cared if she asked me before making plans. It was all down hill from there. |
