I recently purchased a filly that is futurity eligible. I do not know the first thing about it. I'm not sure where to even start asking questions? What are the major benefits of participating?

To be honest, it depends on what futurity she is nominated for .... most have really infomative websites and rules posted ...

Perhaps if you give us a little more information, someone familiar with or who has run at that futurity can give you the lowdown.

Marne Loosenort is in your area and she may be willing to point you in the right direction.  You'll need to find the payment schedules for each futurity you're interested in nominating for.  And don't enter your horse until after December 1 in order to keep it futurity eligible.

I love the futurities, but don't get to go much anymore due to my job.  Most of the bigger futurities require you to be there almost the entire week, and it's just no possible with a full time job, unfortunately.  I sure do miss them though!

Being futurity eligible and being nominated to a futurity are two different things. How old is the horse? Right now everything depends on age.

It depends on where you live and how far you're willing to travel to futurities.  Most of them in the south and east are for 4 and under. Most of them in the north and west are 5 and under.  How old is the horse now?

Is it their age as of Jan 1st or since the BFA is in Dec is it based on the age of the horse when the BFA starts?

It's the age as of Jan 1 of the year they will be competing.  If a horse is a 4 YO now and you want to run them in futurities as a 5 YO, then you cannot enter until after Dec. 1 of this year.  If a horse is a 3 YO now and you want to run them in futurities as a 4 YO, then you cannot enter until after Dec. 1 of this year.  If you horse is a 5 YO now and still futurity eligible, then you need to get to entering some futurities because after this year they are no longer eligible.

For the purposes of showing and any organized high end competition all horses turn the next year older on January 1 no matter when their actual birthday is.

That said, you have this year and next year until Dec 1 (or your first futurity) to get her trained for barrels and up to competition speed IF you are going to futurity as a 4 year old.  If you're looking at 5 year old futurities, add a year to that timeline.

If you feel that the horse is futurity material, you need to have someone who rides futurity horses evaluate the horse with an HONEST opinion. Entry fees are not cheap and have to be paid far in advance. I sent one horse to a trainer and she told me to get rid of the horse. I appreciate the honesty myself. Same trainer has one now and she says this one is good enough to futurity. I have been saving my money for entry fees. The main thing that you need to remember is that the horse must not be entered in any BARREL races until Dec 1 of their 3 year. If running in 5 year you cannot run before Dec of their 4 year old year.

this includes not running at any playdays/gymkhana, etc! Also, get yourself in shape! I am also an amateur wanting to do the futurites with my colt in 2017...someone at my office who has won several back in the day said that they are too competitive (and expensive) to just be casual about it. Get your horse and yourself in gear and have someone help and evaluate you as a pair or find a a jockey.

Ditto! She needs to be running solid in December 2016. 'Solid' meaning running very close to really good open 'national' times.  Futurities are very tough, expensive and time consuming. They are fun though. We run them and great open horses. I just love watching the 'babies' advance. :)

It's January 1st when they are considered a year older. This is so in all AQHA approved events and most other registries.  Dec 1 date to begin competing is only in barrel futurities, not the horse's age.
