My heart is absolutely broke into a million pieces.  I came home Tuesday from taking kids to school and running a few errands to find my yearling (FG daughter out of a daughter of DFP) laying down by the fence.  Not tangled though.  Wound all the way down to the bone.  I'll try to attach pics.  Got her to the Univesity, here is what they assessed:

Ellie has a light tear to the tendon sheath of the back right leg, she tore in two the tendon that runs downt the front of the leg and she has done a some damage to the bone.

They lavaged it out and she as a cast on, still at the hospital.  She is perky, eating and drinking good.  We are watching for laminitis of the good hind foot and for colic.  She is on gentamicin, sulfur and bute for pain.  They are watching for
toxicity of those  The next few days will tell us if there is infection and if she will loose her foot.  If we jump those hurdles then it will be several months before we know if she will be sound

What else should I be doing?  Now or prepare for in the future for when she comes home in a week to 3 weeks?  Supplements? wraps? Iwrap, stem cell?  or any of that other new stuff people do?  I know if she even stands a chance of being sound it will be from advice given here.  I have seen miracles happen because of the people here and I need one now

So sorry to hear that!  I would talk to your vets and let them know your plans for her future, they will give you the best treatment plan.

I had a horse with a DDFT tear. It was a long road back, but he was declared "sound", just had a barely noticeable hitch when you long trotted him that you had to know was there. I did shockwave therapy, ultrasound and stem cells. LOTS of hand walking and stall rest.

She is young and has a good chance to bounce back. Good Luck

No advice but I would just like to say that I am sorry you are going through this!  I have a yearling filly as well and I would be devestated. It can happen to any of them. Just keep in mind that vets can do amazing things nowadays so just stay positive! I've seen some horses come back from horrific things. Please keep us updated with her progress!

You will need to worry about bone spurs where the bone is exposed, I had this happen on one, we caught it early before it was calcified and gave tildren, the body then absorbed it.

With any tendon injury my vet would inject generic stem cells, called a cell, I found I had the same results with this product, as I did with the real stem cells, and it was 1/3 price.

With tendons, if you inject stem cells you will have less chance of scar tissue, if you do it early enough. I have 4 horses to prove this, one bowed a tendon, one tore the dft by the navicular bone, and one for a hematoma in the dft where the tendon had to be surgically split. None of these horses you can see any residual effects, physical or cosmetic.

The other one had an infected tendon sheath, we actually almost lost her, she had to have 7 surgeries, and one ligament cut, perfectly sound but due to the ligament being cut, her one ankle is larger then the other.

Also stem cells shorten the healing time tremendously

The three that I listed, two were legging back up in 6 weeks, the one with the hematoma she took 6 months to recover 100% no swelling in the tendon! but occasionally her leg would puff up.

I would be asking for liver function tests, as gentamicin is hard on the body. Not sure how sulphur is excreted but if it is by the liver as well I would be asking about liver failure

I would also be asking for a second opinion on the cast, as casting can cause serious complications that the vets cannot see. My vet won't cast anything, he will support and wrap to stabilize, but won't cast.

Also I would be getting the horse on a high protein diet as the horse will need protein to repair the damaged tissues.

I would put the horse on probiotics, as the antibiotics will kill all the good

I would also be putting on an ulcer med while at the vet clinic, as this much stress will cause ulcers

Yes I have talked to them. They just aren't my favorite place to use. But one of the two vets I use moved back to Colorado. The other does not have a facility to deal with something like this but he is in the loop and keeping tabs on what they are treating her with

Cur ost would be something I would try.  There is also a forum that you can ask Dr. Schell.  He is great.  And he will tell you exactly what Cur ost you need to use.

Had a mare cut her front leg to the bone with a tendon sheath tear. We did the gentamicin, etc. Once I got her home a week later, I put her on Platinum Performance at 3 scoop am and pm per their instructions. PP was developed by a vet for faster, cleaner healing. I know it played a big part in us being able to use her to gather cattle and trail ride. I know your horse is more severely injured, but I would call them. Prayers your precious girl heals quickly and well.

One of my retired guys tore his tendon sheath.   Had a local vet look at him and  did not get any results in 2 months so I took him to my good vet who put him in  contraption/cast  that was welded to his shoe, he could walk but could not bend that joint.  He healed great in 3 weeks and is sound today.  Good luck with your filly.

Baby horses are notorious for trying to kill and cripple themselves. She must be a good one too because it seems to always be the good ones that really do it right.  I feel your pain...I didn't think my 5 year old was going to see her 5th birthday.  Good luck!
